Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
For future reference his ebay prices are usually higher than the prices on his own website, I think it's probably to cover his ebay fees. I always buy from his website.Tucson Tom wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 3:51 pm
I have to confess that I caved in and paid a bit extra to an Ebay seller (Sooner State Knives), but only $40 above expected retail.
Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
I’m incredibly happy with this knife! Can’t wait to get cuttin’. However... I want this blade looking as it does now. I live in Utah (dry climate) and am wondering just how careful I have to be with it? It’s still soaked in oil, but the size of the oxygen absorbing packets they included from the factory makes me want to keep it that way
Is this doomed to be a safe queen for those who don’t want any patina? Or will my local climate allow me to carry on a day I don’t plan to get my pockets all sweaty on?

Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
Clean it daily after use, don't use it to cut meat or citrus fruits, coat it with a bit of mineral oil maybe once a week depending how often you use it. Should be ok. I use my M4 Gayle Bradley 2 quite regularly and have no patina following those steps. I understand the composition is a bit different, but neither are stainless. I just got my Para 3 version of this knife today and can't wait to give it some work!

Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
Makes sense, so I shouldn’t worry too much if the oil on the blade rubs off in my pocket? I have the para 3 in M4 and haven’t had bad luck so far, but it’s easy to keep the exposed blade coated in oil when the edge is hidden well inside the scales.
Is this steel any better at resisting rust than M4? I’ve done some research on steels, but can’t fund much on M4, and next to none on Rex 45. Most of what I’ve found is a tad older than these newer super steels.

If you're not experiencing any issues with M4 I wouldn't expect to see a big difference with Rex 45. Just keep an eye on it and see how it does. If you start to get a light patina you can usually clean it off with a little Flitz or something similar.Joey wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 11:13 pmMakes sense, so I shouldn’t worry too much if the oil on the blade rubs off in my pocket? I understand, seems reversible as long as I don’t let it get out of hand. Would you happen to know how this steel would store untouched in a dry climate (stored inside of a pelican case or similar case) if it were oil free? As if to ask if it requires constant oil application throughout the entire blade surface.
Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
I was just fondling it (as I have been the past.......day) and I noticed some blemishes on the steel. These were both darker grey and slightly brown if you can’t see them well. They were more apparent, but I’ve taken some off with a q-tip and gun oil. I cant progress further with those two tools alone. Has it begun? Or is this perhaps some factory equipment oil residue? Sorry I’m so new to this stuff. Fantastic knife otherwise

Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
It might not be, but in your first picture, it looks more like the thin oxide layer that sometimes happens during heat treatment in the austenitizing oven. I have similar discoloration in the Spydie hole of my Caly 3. Basically, it should have been removed during finishing of the blade, but was missed.
Don't worry about the blade so much. Just use and enjoy it.

Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
So do we think that the entire run has been shipped and sold?
Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
I bet more show up at dealers. If not, then it was a very small run.
Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
Discoloration from hardening cycle (austenitizing temperature) in heat treatment is not likely. Today we use atomosphere furnaces, usually Nitrogen gas to protect the steel surface from forming the dark layer of alpha iron discoloration. In a open furnace the oxygen in air combines with the carbon in steel and leaves a dark iron alpha phase on the surface.
The discoloration in the spydie hole is from the Laser cutting and rough machining operation and has not been cleaned or polished prior to heat treatment. The remainder of the blade is ground or machined to final dimensions and has good surface finish for heat treatment operation.
Basics of steel and heat treatment:

Many people have a sweat chemical content which quickly reacts with a steel surface to cause darkening or staining.
I commonly wipe down my knife blades with a silicone cloth used for firearms. It gives a thin protective layer which prevents discoloration on the steel surface. Also a small piece of silicone cloth in a plastic bag is easy to carry in the field.

Re: CPM Rex 45 Para 2 !!
I heard from my trusted seller that they aren't expecting anymore. They keep bugging the Spyderco sales rep and it sounds like there are not more to distribute. I think this may be the first Sprint Run I've ever missed out on (that I wanted)!

Any idea when you pre-ordered? I'm just curious to see how far along in the pre-order line they are. Still on the first day, second day, third?....
