H2 Steel

#1

Post by Freediver »

I was excited to read the May byte dedicated to my favorite model, the Pacific Salt. It appears Spyderco is moving to an upgrade of H1 called H2. H1 is what got my into Spydercos in the first place years ago so I am excited to test out H2. Here are some specs from the byte:

Here’s some specs from the byte:

To better ….corrosion-resistant properties.

I’m really curious what effect this change will have on Edge Retention.

I agree. I was completely satisfied with
H1 despite people’s complaints for edge retention. I was also very happy with LC200N and looking forward to trying out Magnacut. What a great time to be a salt Spyderco fan.

I was very surprised to see this in the Byte today! I wonder what the impetus for making this steel is though.

It's not a traditionally hardened steel, so it has to have a pretty low upper limit in terms of HRC (and probably edge retention). Though I'd love to be proved wrong about this.

With LC200N and Vanax Superclean (which I don't think, again correct me if I'm wrong, has ever been used on a spyderco) available with nearly the stainless properties of H1 and much better toughness and edge retention, I'd love to know what the design goals of H2 were and why the designers undertook this effort.

I'd suspect that cost is a major factor as both LC200N and Vanax are very expensive, but spyderco is no stranger to expensive steels. Perhaps there are other advantages to avoiding the heat treating process?

I'd love to hear other theories.

:squinting-tongue I'm going to finally buy a Salt in H1 then !
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

I am also wondering about edge retention and ease of sharpening differences, if there are any. H1 really doesn't need to be more rustproof, right?

I’m thinking of grabbing a back up H1 Pacific Salt 2 now.

That's my plan, I intended to try it because of vivi anyways, but seems like I need to add a 4th knife for june... This is not gonna be easy !

There are a few people who have gotten rust on H1 that was NOT due to contamination from other metal particles embedded into it from the grinding or etching(?) process.

It would be nice if there was an increase in edge retention, but as long as the edge retention isn't worse than H1, it sounds great.

If H2 is basically the same thing as H1, but from a different manufacturer and more corrosion resistant, then why will H1 be missed? Other than the number on the logo for the steel name?

If it was going to be even the same in edge holding, they probably would have mentioned it in the Byte. They mentioned it's the same toughness (and better corrosion resistance).

Very, very interested in this steel. I'm very happy with H1 and look forward to comparing the two steels.

Yes, but I doubt that Sal would think that H2 having less edge retention than H1 would be acceptable. So they probably are at least mostly the same in that regard.

I look forward trying H2 out . I would not be surprised if there is an interview with Spyderco with the Blade show coming up . MG2

I'm curious how less carbon, less nitrogen, and less chromium will manifest in steel characteristics.
