currently I have the medium (brown), white( fine), and white with red tip (ultra fine) and I'm wondering is it worth buying the diamond set of triangle stones.

keep in mind I only sharpen with the sharpmaker and I don't own any bench stones and I don't really know how to use them as well so with that in mind should I get the diamond stones.


ALSO if I do get the stones should I still use the medium and fine before using the diamond or what order should I do them in??

I think you have enough stones to start with. Now learn the tool. I think you'll be able to see what you need for your purposes.

If you only touch up sharp knives your stones are fine.
If you have special steels S110V,...) diamonds are faster.

Please watch the included DVD.

You start with coarse and get finer.

Brown
White
White red

diam= 68 micron, 400 grit
Brown= 20 micron, 600 grit
fine= 6 micron,1200 grit
UF= 3 micron

So the diamonds are coarser than the brown one ??

Very much so.

Yes!
All stones should be used dry.
Diamond and CBN with no pressure.
The diamonds are glued in, too much pressure will remove them.
Use all stones with light pressure.

What's your experience so far?

Diamond stones need to break in too though. Not sure about sharpmaker rods..

But,

It is a common practice to rub Wicked Edge diamond stones together lightly to promote break in when they are brand new.

I’ve sharpened probably a hundred times on diamonds, these same stones still cut through S110V very easily.

I've owned my first 204 Sharpmaker since the late 90s when it first was introduced. Since then I've always gotten every stone available for it. I've personally have yet to get the CBN stones but they are high on my list to get within the next 2 to 3 months when I get caught up on everything. But I've had 2 sets of the diamond stones for quite some time.

I'm just hoping at some point that Spyderco will eventually offer a set of really coarse or extra-coarse stones for extremely beat up blades. But eventually do try to get everything that they offer because if you are serious about keeping your blades maintained you'll be using them I can assure you.

I notice a different feeling of new vs. used diamond rods.
I don't break them in by rubbing.
If you do so it's fine :)

Hey there, JD. Unless you're just purchasing them for completion's sake you can skip the CBN stones. I have both and they are so identical that I can put one of each in my sharpmaker and not tell which is which. In fact, at this point, I don't even know which is which. The differences between the two don't really come into play in the sharpmaker's application; they appear in high-heat and high-pressure grinding applications.

Are these data someone’s (or your) surmise, or Spyderco’s own declaration? I’ve wondered about the grit-equivalents but thought Spyderco was leaving it a mystery as part of the Sharpmaker’s magic. Just curious.
