Guidance on Loctite and thread lock etc

#1

Post by demoncase »

While mooching online for the current technical data sheet for Loctite 277 (Yes, it's a rock'n'roll lifestyle I lead at work) I came across this:

http://www.loctite.com.au/aue/content_d ... rt_V10.pdf

A handy-dandy chart describing the commonly available grades of Loctite and their applications.

Of note should be the top left hand corner- For those who talk about "Loctite Blue" and "Loctite Red"- this is the important detail.

Interesting points (or I think so):
Top left Threadlocking- Be aware that "Red Loctite" comprises 3 different grades, in 2 different strengths....The High Strength stuff (277) is the very Devil to remove if you get it in a thread you didn't want it on.

For those looking to fix sleeves, bearing and other smooth sided tubes in place- Threadlock ain't the puppy- but the stuff in Retaining is and is over a different formulation. I've used Loctite 680 green on plain bearings. I needed to use the oxy cutter to get it off. ;)

Instant Bonding- Mid right- Loctite 480 is a 'rubber filled/toughened superglue'- I've used it and it is amazing stuff for repairs- and more water resistant than your normal stuff
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.
