Micarta out of fashion?

#1

Post by MarcusH »

I noticed that there is only one folder in the current catalog with a Micarta handle, the C153 Des Horn. Why is this so, may it be due to lack of demand?
I think that's very unfortunate, because I love Micarta and some of my alltime-favorites have a Micarta handle: Calypso jr, Tim Zowada and the big Dyad.

My suggestion for the future:
Chaparral 2 with burgundy or canvas micarta
Sage 4 with canvas micarta and a backlock

I didn't even know the Des Horn was micarta until it arrived in the mail. I assumed it was polished G-10. I like micarta a lot, and I'd like to see more of it.

Not sure if even that one is Micarta, as there seems to be conflicting info. The product page mentions micarta in various places, but the item selection (next to the "add to cart" button) says G-10. The SKU also tends to indicate G-10, as it reads: C153G.
Chris_H wrote:I got mine and it is polished G-10 for the scales. The SKU also identifies the material as G-10.
We asked for clarification in the product release announcement thread, but haven't heard an official word yet.

There's still hope, as the Sage 4 at one point was being considered with white paper micarta (don't know if it still is). Kelly (sales manager at Spyderco) was also thinking about a micarta Caly Jr. run.

Thanks for the info. Both were high on my wish list.

I'd like to see canvas micarta on a knife, similar to ESEE knives. It'd be nice to see something different against all of the black "tacticool" knives in the market.

Nice work Don!
I really like micarta too. Even with a smooth finish it seems grippy in some way. Speaking of white micarta, glad I snagged a Phoenix. Ti, ball lock... serious pocket jewelry for sure! ;)

Micarta is nice, but linen should be polished to look it's best, that could be slick.
Of course it's not as strong as G10 so it should not be any thinner 1/8" thick(my guide). Spyderco makes lots of thin handled knives and use .090" thick
G10 scales, it works for the G10 but I don't know about micarta??

Then canvas micarta is beautiful plus very grippy. However, it stains after hard use.

I do like it though.

I like micarta handles, especially linen rounded like on Vieles, Hossoms, Street Beat, fixed Lum. To tell the truth I bought one of the Hossoms, just because I love the handle.

Canvas micarta does show use when it's been used hard, no doubt about that. But, I think it does so in a way that just adds class/character to the knife overall. Unlike the grey G-10 that just looks dirty when used hard. More canvas micarta for me please!

Yes, more micarta, please. It looks good, feels good in the hand, and it does not abrade fabric like the pebble grain G-10. Of course, polished G-10 isn't bad either, but micarta is still much nicer.

Marcus, please tell me your address and the exact location in your house where you keep that micarta Caly Jr. I will be visiting you shortly. You Germans don't keep firearms in the home, do you? Any German Shepherds or anything else I should be wary of before visiting you and your collection in the middle of the night?

FWIW I love micarta also.
