Mathematical Spyder Contest II: Return of the Unnecessarily Long "Rules" Section!

#1

Post by uhiforgot »

Yep, it’s that time again; time for another one of my mentally masochistic contests! But remember that as always 1) there are rules, and 2) I am going to make you think. This contest will not be as mathematically complex as the last one, but you'll need to stay tuned-in if you want to win!

HERE'S THE RULES: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

I have chosen a four-digit number (so that’s a number between 0000 and 9999), plus one number after the decimal in case of a tie, and we shall call this number N. But you will not be trying to guess directly what it is.

Instead, you will be choosing 2 four-digit numbers creating a range in which you can “box-in” number N. In other words: you need to try to choose a number that is greater than N and a number that is less than N. A lot of people may well accomplish this so here’s where the competition comes in: Of all the contestants who are able to box in-my number, the one with the smallest difference between his or her chosen numbers will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie the win will go to the contestant with a number that is closest to N. Assuming 2 tied winners have the same set of numbers, the win will go to the contestant who has the earlier post or edit time.

But here’s where it gets cruel and diabolical: unlike other contests, I will allow you to change your choices throughout the entire time up until the end. You will see other posts and think to yourself "Wait a minute, based on what these folks have, I should change my numbers to cover such-and-such or adjust blah-blah-blah" That’s right, I’m going to let you second-guess yourself for the entire time :D

So this has a lot of implications: You can choose a large range that increases your chances of “catching” N but decreases your chances of a win if you do, OR you can choose a small range hoping to clench victory if you just so happen to catch N. Or you can switch back and forth between strategies ;) Of course, there's no doubt in my mind that you all will be playing off each-other's numbers and creating new strategies as you go along.

On Friday, May 1st at 12:00PM MST, THE THREAD WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL POSTS AND EDITS. NO IF'S, AND'S, OR BUT'S. I will then begin tabulating results.

You think to yourself: Yeah, I would subject myself to such mental anguish because...?
-------------------------------------------------------
You will be competing for a brand new in the box CF Harpy! The week that it arrived I couldn’t get it out of my mind and nobody could pry it out of my hands, but since then this classic has been sitting on my shelf without so much as a nudge. To be honest, it was intended to be a backup for an identical CF Harpy that occasionally enjoys tours of duty at weddings and other formal events, but a legend like this doesn’t deserve to wait a decade or more for its predecessor to retire before being pressed into service. It deserves a good home with an appreciative owner/user, and I'm certain that one of my knifebrothers or knifesisters here in Spyderville can provide that. You have all been like family to me here, and I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate that.

It is also for this reason that I am going to limit this contest to forum members whose join date and time is prior to the start of this thread. I will NOT allow this special blade to be snatched-up by somebody who only joined the forum to get in on the contest. This is a contest for my brothers and sisters. Period.
-------------------------------------------------------
With that said, let the contest begin! I wish you all the best in your guessing and second-guessing :D HAVE FUN!!!

A very wise man once told me "Eat to live; don't live to eat." ...To my knowledge that's the only stupid thing he's ever said.

Wow, talk about generous. Thanks a lot for the cool, albeit diabolically mind-messingly cool, contest.

If I'm understanding the rules correctly, You have to pick two 4-digit numbers, i.e., 0499 and 8666. Just a FYI.

That being said, I pick 2112 and 9176.
