Best way to soften thumb hole?
Best way to soften thumb hole?
What is the best way to soften the edge on a particularly sharp Spyder hole?
The hole on my new Ayoob is so sharp its eating a notch into my thumbnail so I'd like to soften it ever so slightly.
(Im sure this has been answered but I couldnt find the right search terms to bring it up - feel free to link me an old thread)
Thanks in advance!

Corner end of the brown rods. If you use sandpaper/pencil be very careful, it's super easy to scratch the outside of the blade this way. Really any corner of a sharpening stone that isn't too coarse should do it.

I used a piece of 600 grit sandpaper on my index finger to do my Sage and it worked fine, just go slow and be careful however you decide to do it and it'll go fine.

I used 1000 grit sandpaper and it worked like a charm and if you are careful, no extra scratches

I used the white stones the one time I did this, but I agree - the sharpmaker rods are the best way to go about this.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Get a wooden/plastic/metal dowel that's bigger diameter than the hole. Put in your drill press and file a taper on the end. Wrap the taper with some emery cloth, or slop it up with lapping compound. With the drill press running slow, push the blade into the taper, cutting down the sharp corner on the hole.
Because a blade that is flung around uncontrollably by a machine tool can allow your red juices to flow to the outside, you might want to clamp the blade down, on top of a couple wooden blocks. It's safer, but not as expedient.
Re: Best way to soften thumb hole?
Just a few twist with this chamfer tool works great. Just enough to take the sharp edge off but not too smooth.

I did work on my C60 first with piece of 120 paper on marker, then with it but slowly.

I’d rather toughen my finger then soften the spydie hole.

Sandpaper and a marble or ball bearing.
Some people use these.

Re: Best way to soften thumb hole?
I would be extremely careful at 'softening' the edge of a Spyderhole. If you accidentally remove the crispness of its edge completely, it's going to make it difficult for the thumb to get a good purchase when opening. You can always remove material, but you can't add it back on. So go very slowly.
The hole edges are 'crisp' for a reason. I have numerous Spydercos, many/most with hole edges that I can shave little bits off my nails if I scrape the backs of them against the edge of the hole. They have sharpness, but I've never come close to feeling like the Spyderhole's edge was going to cut me, or wear a notch into my thumbnail. I'd rather the hole be sharp than chamfered.

I've only ever used my thumb. It's certainly not the quickest way but likely the best way I reckon.

Automotive paint stores sell very fine wet n dry sand paper like 1000 - 3000 grit.
Also Brasso or Chrome past polish are semi abrasive.

Re: Best way to soften thumb hole?
I like a nice crisp edge on the opening holes, but I did knock the edge down on one knife years ago but for the life of me I can't remember which knife it was? I think it was a Techno 1? Anyway it was razor sharp!
I used the end of a Sharpmaker brown rod, just two or three light spins and it was perfect, right back to crisp, just where I like it.

Re: Best way to soften thumb hole?
I was thinking something similar. If you have a variety of tools look around for something with a small rounded end like the end of a screwdriver handle, end of a ratchet handle, etc. Then take a small strip of wet or dry sandpaper, stretch it over the rounded part from side to side, put it against the hold and turn it a few times. Go slowly. You want the sweet spot of just the right amount of sharpness but if you aren't careful you could go past this and there isn't any coming back, at least not any easy way.
