Question about Caly 3.5

#1

Post by Soanso McMasters »

Hello all,

Just got my Caly 3.5 and it has a gap between the steel liner and back spacer by the pivot. If the pivot is any tighter, the blade won’t open or close. Is this within spec or ok for this model? Pic attached.

Mine has a little bit in the same location, but the photo seems to exaggerate what I'm seeing in person. Seems like it is just a little off from being flush.
Mine is a user, so I am probably not the best to answer within tolerances.

May your feet be warm and dry and your throat warm with whiskey. A knife in hand or in the sock band.

How tight is your pivot? With mine finger tight it has no self close at all.

Even if this is a user knife, at a cost of nearly $250, any gaps or not flush surfaces are unacceptable.

I have the VG10 version and it has the poorest fit and finish of any Spyderco I own. I love the form and feel in the hand though and I would instantly buy a CQI version or one made in a different factory. One fairly easy improvement I made to mine was to remove the blade and polish the tang and liners. It went from being a horrible gritty action to smooth as silk despite having no washers.

I had a 3.5 that came with a piece of metal (wire edge type piece) from either the liner or lock bar lodged right in that area, between the lock bar and liner. Taking it apart, I found it, cleared it out, and it was fine. Any chance when tightened it feels like there could be something like that going on?

That was back in 2012, so forgive me not remembering the exact reason(s) I knew there was an issue.

Not sure if these videos below help. I have not adjusted the pivot at all. If felt tight when I got it, so I did my usual break in. Lots of open close. When it gets a little gritty I add a drop of mineral oil then repeat. Works great now. Self close is good. Not as strong as my Seki models, but good.

That’s a big help actually. Something isn’t right with mine.

It might be some crud that got between the tang and the liner. Try flushing it out really well and see if that helps.

My Pakkawood DF2 has a similar gap.
Was kind of bummed when I first got it, because everything else about that knife is so nice, but once I started using it, I haven't really given it any thought. It's a user, it's in my pocket almost every day, so I figure it will wear in an become less noticeable with time. After reading this thread I will do a disassembly though, to see if there are any foreign objects stuck in there. I didn't even think of that myself..
