Laid my love to rest today

#1

Post by Naperville »

Our dog, a Bichon Frise, became severely ill around 6 to 8 weeks ago. It was his teeth, and the only way to save him seemed to be to pull the 11 remaining teeth he had. He was 16+ years old, but otherwise in good health. He was only 17lbs. What a giant though. He was my best friend. What a sweet friend.

I could go on and on about him, but I will not. But he was a light unlike any other.

I struggled over the past two months to keep him alive, and it was nothing to me, I'd do it all again. I hand fed him daily. I bottle fed him when necessary. And, when he was too weak to walk to the park, I carried him, and dropped him down gently to sniff whatever he found of interest.

My family was adamant: put him down they said. We went though several sets of medicine and pain killer and each time he responded like a champion, bouncing right back! I believe that he would have lived another 6 months, pain free, with the continuation of medicine, and had many many happy days. I did not want too do the deed, never having put down a pet. Well, I held him in my arms as they administered the sleeping, and then the euthanasia blow. I'll never do it again. Wow,. I cannot believe that I participated in that.

Pets that live inside my home will never be euthanized again so quickly. I will afford to them all of the medicines to keep them alive, until they let me know that it is time to check-out. Just like I would any human.

Why not? What "SIN" did any loving pet do to me or to God? NONE. Surely if there is a heaven, he is in. As for me, I don't hold a candle to my pet, my love.

I feel for you man. I, too can't live without the unconditional love of these precious animals. Each time they leave me, I say never again, then some other friend steals my heart. I just have to make more space in my heart since each one forever has a place.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. Losing pets is harder than losing people sometimes. Nothing beats the companionship of a pet, especially a dog!

I'm so sorry. I've gone through this absolutely heartbreaking experience myself, and it's just awful. No matter how sick they are. No matter how old. It's still terrible. From one life-long animal-lover to another: I feel your pain. But you obviously have a lot of love to give, and there are so many deserving animals out there. When you're ready, don't forget that there's another wonderful dog out there that needs a person like you.

I doubt if it's any confort to you my Brother but I've been down this road more times than I would want to. I still get teared up when I think of an Irish Setter who was literally like a very best friend to me for years. He lived 14 years which is good for a big dog like that. But whenever I go out to my old place of residence I still expect him to run out in front of my vehicle as he did so many times before.

Probably one of the reasons I haven't gotten another pet in quite some time now. If I do move down to the Ozarks in a couple of years like I've planned I'll probably get another German Shepherd or Irish Setter again. When you live in a rural setting you really need a good dog. Yes I've been down that road myself and it doesn't seem fair like so many other things in life. But do cherish the good times you had with your dog because those memories are something no one can steal from you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Naperville. I lost my dog (and best friend) to cancer in September and it's still too difficult to talk about. I wish you and you family all the best.

Our family started caring for canine friends in 2004. We've lost a few good ones in recent years. It really hurts. I sympathize with you for your loss.

Sorry for your loss mate... Been there.

Yeah euthanasia isn't something easy at all. At least, you stayed by your dog's side, you stayed with hil until the end. Sometime people aren't brave enough to witness the procedure. You did well, but I feel you. It's hard.

I'm sure you did it already, but a small prayer for him is always a good thing.

I'm so sorry. I laid my dog to rest, and I cried harder for his passing than I did for any human. It took us 13 years to get another sheepdog.

My condolences. Losing a loyal friend is a terrible thing, but our pain is the price the universe makes us pay for them.

So sorry to hear Naperville, losing a dog like this is no different than losing a family member, cause that's exactly what they are! My last lost was an almost 15 year old German Wirehaired Pointer. I took my younger son with me to the Vet to have her put down, to this day I'm so glad my son went with me cause I was a slobbering mess!

Remember all the good times and the stupid little quirky, funny things he did! Years from now you will see things out of nowhere that will trigger a great memory and you'll catch yourself smiling, or even laughing!

Dogs are awesome, don't understand anyone who doesn't love dogs?

I am sorry. It is tough to lose a loved one, even a dog. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried for days when my dog was hit and killed by a car that ran into the median to run over him.

My wife and I still mourn not having dogs. She developed a bad allergy to them and I am allergic to cats, so we are petless. Dogs love with unconditional love and when there is no dog, something is missing from life.
