Edge retention slicing cardboard (misc. steels)

Post by Cliff Stamp »

This was requested as a challenge which I thought was interesting, the method is fairly standard :

-1/8" cardboard cut on a 2" draw
-45 degree angle of attack blade to cardboard
-1 ft/s speed
-edge retention statistic TCE (1.5%) in^2
-sharpness measured slicing bergia, 25 gram load
-20 dps, coarse DMT micro-bevel

The knives are various steels and various geometries, including significant differences in edge angle. Now sometimes in experiments you look at one variable, in this case steel. However in many cases you can't for practical reasons more than one thing can change, or maybe you are even interested in how different variables would influence each other so you need to change them at the same time. What happens if you compare a bunch of knives of different steels and different geometries, how do the different variables being changed influence the independent variable (edge retention).

Spyderco Pingo

Image

-N690
-0.11" blade stoc, flat grind, 3 dps
-edge is -0.009-0.011", 17-18 dps

ESEE 3

Image

-1095, 55-57 HRC
-edge is 0.027/11 dps (reground)
-blade is 0.115" thick, full flat grind on a very wide blade (1.2", ~2.5 dps)
-grinds easily on a basic stone, 8-16 psi on a Suehiro 'Chemical' produces heavy swarf, 25 to 50 pps to reset the edge

Svord 350B, this is part of the premium line (higher aesthetics) :

Image

-15n20 blade steel
-0.09" blade stock
-partial height convex grind, ~4 dps
-edge is 0.012"/13 dps
-grinds easily on a Suehiro 'Chemical', maybe produces less swarf than the ESEE 3

SM-100 Jeremy McCullen

Image

-0.16" blade stock
-zero grind (personal modification), ~4 dps (1 3/16" blade width)
-edge has an increase in curvature of ~9/10 dps in the last 0.015"

Uddo Beavertail

Image

-12C27 blade steel, 0.12" thick stock
-full flat grind, 3 dps
-edge is 0.005-0.010" thick, ~ 20 dps

Kyle Bettleyon Rhino

Image

-CTS-XHP
-0.14" stock, deep hollow grind, 3/4" high blade bevel, ~ 5 dps
-edge bevel is fairly uneven, 0.008-0.022"/~8 dps

I have one run done with each. When I get 3-5 done I will put up a graph and then the challenge is to figure out which knife is which performance by thinking about the steel and the geometry. I will then update with the actual results.

Popcorn ready.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

The results :

Colin had an amazing answer, he identified all knives correctly and came extremely close saying 10.2 on the Modulator.
