How many times a day do you use your knife?

#1

Post by Fred S »

I was working on my bathroom remodel this weekend and got to thinking about how many times I used my Manix and Pacific Salt for those 2 days.

At least 30 different uses (out of pocket, cut, back in pocket)
Experience is something you get right after you need it

It think it all depends on what is going on that day...

For instance, this past weekend I was off from work and just relaxing around not really doing much. So knife was not used alot. But if you take the weekend before that I was ripping the rug up in all of the rooms of the house and my SE delica was used alot!(cut like butter through carpet)

But on an everyday basis from work/home use.... Maybe 5-10 times(even though I voted 2-5 which I have no idea why...).

Most work days my knife sees over a hundred cuts. I rate my knives on their performance cutting the things I need to cut. For me it's the ZDP Caly 3. Vg10 won't make it through a full day without touching it up. Most of my cutting consist of shrink wrap, large polyethylene bags and packaged meet products. Part of my job requires me to remove out of date and damaged meat from it's packaging for recycling. Some days, like today I'll have more than a 55 gallon barrel of meat to separate from the packaging.

The best Spyderco I have found for my needs is the ZDP Caly 3. The worst would have to be the Lava

On average, I'd say at least 5-10, possibly more. If you count Kitchen Sharps as Spydercos, then definitely more. :D

2/5 is prob a normal day, some days more. I know if i don't have it in my pocket it seems like I need it about a hundred times a day.

Was that the number of times or the number of hours? Not that it changes my answer. :D

Now, it's 5-20 times a day. But a couple of years ago, I was working in a printing factory and the Caly Jr, Meerkat or Lil't I had on me could see 200-400 cuts a day. Boxes, wrapping paper, plastic wrap cords, enveloppes, diner, some fingers, ...

2 weeks ago, I even cut my own dad's wrist while he was holding a piece of drywall. If the cut had been 1/32" inch deeper, it would have been a 911 situation.

Take care,

When I'm at work I dig the sucker out probably at least 20 times during the shift. Opening boxes, breaking them down, maybe some food prep.
Use your blades in the kitchen, it's great bonding time!

Im always cutting something here at work. I do not encounter much cardoard, but poly-pro line, vinyl tubing, sheets of linnen and canvas, cords, rubber matting etc.... H1 pac salt is my most carried blade. I cant come to pocketing my millie at work, from what im told its on the less than common side bieng BG42. Oddly enough, ive found myself using my temacious at home alot more than i use my pac salt at work.
The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of meeting deadlines is forgotten.

At least once a day during the week to cut my fruit for lunch at work ...otherwise it rides in my pocket just in case.

When working around the house I use Olfa utility blades, no point dulling a good Spyderco when you have a cheap and sharp alternative, that way the Spydie is sharp for out of the house use.

Well, I'm certainly in the more than ten catagory, and sometimes that knife will be in my hand for an hour or two at a time.

I only use my knives once or twice a day at work, most likely, but in general, I probably break 10 times per day in one way or another. some days, maybe no more than once or twice, but some days, 100+ times easily - so I probably average out somewhere between 15 and 30 or so. I am so used to just pulling a knife out and using it without even thinking about it that it is quite difficult to quantify in a reasonable and pertinent way.

As a Martial Arts Instructor and Knife Fighting Instructor I probably use my knives closer to fifty+ times a day and then you have to add on all the times I'm busy cutting things...other than people....Doc :D
