Choosing Spyder for Urban Emergency Kit
Choosing Spyder for Urban Emergency Kit
I live in an area of Los Angeles where we have been warned (repeatedly) that if there is any type of disaster, we will be "the last people to leave Los Angeles" because our community is a long distance from any freeways. So our community preparedness organizations have been encouraging us to prepare to shelter in place.
I've been assembling a "shelter in place" kit--like a bug-out bag, only it's distributed into two 5-gallon buckets...one wet, one dry. (Don't ask how I figured THAT one out!) The 'dry' bucket has the usual emergency/survival/camping gear in it, plus a Kershaw dive knife, a swiss army knife, and...I can't decide which Spyder...
At this point it contains, of all things, a Lum. Why? Because one of the most likely use of an urban emergency-kit knife is probably going to be for food preparation, I figure. And the Lum has a nice spreading blade.
I could trade it for a Caly or a Manix or a Stretch...but given the all-around usage nature, for cooking to opening packages to cutting plastic/boxes/rope, and whatever else you need a knife to do in an emergency situation, a "midsize" knife with a leaf-shaped blade seems appropriate.
What Spyder would you put in YOUR Urban preparedness kit? (Just one!)

Full size Manix, but only because there would already be a Stretch and a Kiwi in my pockets and an Assist in my truck. :)

Baton a tree? No problem
Open cans? No problem
Killing zombies? No problem
Cutting off a limb in an emergency? No problem
Yah, bug kicks ***.

I think it's time to throw away my multipurpose folding knife that is made in china, because I watch the 127 hours movie, ****! can't evenly cut skins. :)

In a bag or bucket for emergencies? Of current :spyder: options, I think I'm going to say Jumpmaster. I figure the chances of breaking or dulling it beyond immediate usefulness are probably lower for almost any given timeframe than almost any other current model.

Now bear in mind that for lightness and concealability I like my Spyderhawk/Manix2 EDC combo, but I would probably have at least a few nice folders in a BOB (I have about 50 now but that's because it's primarily used as a knife and incendiary type bag at the moment), and I also would tend to have either my 22" machete or some manner of hatchet/tomahawk in anything larger (machete is currently in my trunk and my only surviving hatchet and the head of another are in my knife bag :D ), but you were talking about one knife and I think the jumpmaster does an awful lot for general purpose use under all conditions.

First, I'd get a good bike, and know how to take care of it. The way I figure it, the people closest to the highways will actually have the least chance of being able to get the heck out of Dodge because the highways and all approaches will be instantly overcome by traffic.Bolster wrote:I live in an area of Los Angeles where we have been warned (repeatedly) that if there is any type of disaster, we will be "the last people to leave Los Angeles" because our community is a long distance from any freeways. In my car kit, I have a Byrd Cara Cara that I got for free. If it gets stolen I won't cry. Assuming your talking about folders for a home kit, I'd choose an Endura. Plenty of steel, light weight. For a fixed blade, Temp 2.

Exactly and knowing LA in a state of emergency they would just confiscate all your knives anyway
So maybe a ladybug, so it can be hidden
I would think military or better yet a fixed blade. You should find the more paranoid apocalyptic type forums for your prep planning. On those forum there is a lot stupid stuff, but you will know the good info when you see it.
The exact spyderco knife is a far less important detail then some you are missing.
