That’s awesome and it’s amazing what you can do with a pumpkin…well doneSkywalker wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 3:25 pmFirst frost earlier this week, killed all the pumpkin leaves off though some of the vines appeared to be hanging on. Ended up with roughly 15 properly ripened and another half dozen that still have some green on them.
Roasted then blended three for pumpkin puree today; chunked, skinned and froze another two; gutted two for jack-o'-lanterns (still need carving); and have a couple more promised to friends.

Does anyone grow stuff in the winter?… I’ve
had pretty good success with these:
Broccoli
Collard Greens
Turnips
Kale
Spinach
Cauliflower
Cabbage

Re: Show your Vegetable Gardens and Harvests
For those starting stuff indoors, what do you have and how are they looking?
Broccoli, kale, cucumbers, and pumpkins already sprouted here; waiting on the peppers and tomatoes still. Plus various annual flowers in the covered tray below.
Tried my best not to buy too many more seeds this year and use leftovers from prior years...not entirely successful there

Someday I will try starting from seed indoors but first I have to find the time and do some research…it must be very satisfying

Re: Show your Vegetable Gardens and Harvests
Sustainably harvested our Broccoli all winter and it’s really cool to not only skip the grocery store but also supply the neighbors
Re: Show your Vegetable Gardens and Harvests
It is somewhat satisfying but it's more that we got a light dusting of snow yesterday and our average last frost date is the first week of May. So for stuff that can't take any cold it helps to have a longer growing season.SaltyCaribbeanDfly wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 7:33 amSomeday I will try starting from seed indoors but first I have to find the time and do some research…it must be very satisfying
And your broccoli looks great! I would love to be able to do that all winter.

Re: Show your Vegetable Gardens and Harvests
Wow that’s a late average last frost date, we usually plant early to mid April so I totally get why you do it and the Broccoli has been fun for sure
Re: Show your Vegetable Gardens and Harvests
Oh yes, it really is. Especially if you even make it with your own seeds from last harvest.SaltyCaribbeanDfly wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 7:33 amSomeday I will try starting from seed indoors but first I have to find the time and do some research…it must be very satisfying
Now to your thoughts that are causing you slight concern: My dear friend, you know that once the seed is in the ground, you don't have to sit around with it anymore... it will then grow on its own

Now using seed from your previous harvest must be the ultimate in satisfaction and yes I realize once in the ground it becomes less maintenance, it’s the initial process I’ve got to study up onPeter1960 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 2:12 pmOh yes, it really is.
