The Charisma is clearly a strictly cutting tool (which is supposed to be the case for most knives anyway). It will pack the cutting geometry of a scalpel in a really thin and non-aggressive package. Ideal for cutting stuff like paper on a cutting board, schmatics and all.
In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Although the stock is 0.2mm thicker on the Charisma, it’s hole is significantly bigger than the Z-cut. This area WILL be a point of weakness on this knife.
I honestly think Spyderco should do away the Spydiehole on this model, or at the very least make it smaller.
Nice little slicer. I like thin blades, but this ^ was my first reaction. Not much metal around that hole.
^ Same here. I'm a prime target for a knife of this sort, very attracted to it, love the slim profile, but the hole size relative to the blade cross section gives me some concern. I don't know much about BD1N, maybe it's tough enough to handle it. With a smaller hole and a nail nick I'd be all over it.

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
i'm confused why people are worried about this knife breaking. it's a small blade and it's only 1mm thick. this knife clearly isn't made for applying any kind of lateral force. it's made for slicing and opening your mail, not for building a cabin in the woods.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

agree 100%.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 11:00 ami'm confused why people are worried about this knife breaking. it's a small blade and it's only 1mm thick. this knife clearly isn't made for applying any kind of lateral force. it's made for slicing and opening your mail, not for building a cabin in the woods.
If the Charisma only had a nail nick it would not be nearly as interesting.
This is one I'll have to try for sure
Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
I can certainly understand where the concern comes from but I agree that for the intended use of the knife it shouldn’t be something to worry about.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 11:00 ami'm confused why people are worried about this knife breaking. it's a small blade and it's only 1mm thick. this knife clearly isn't made for applying any kind of lateral force. it's made for slicing and opening your mail, not for building a cabin in the woods.
On a completely different side of things, I actually love the way the Charisma looks with the large hole in the relatively short blade. To me, it gives the knife a whimsical sense of character that I really love! (I feel the same way about the Kiwi 4 and it is actually why I like that knife so much)
The blade stock is noticeably different but Kiwi 4, Ouroboros, and Parata all have a comparable amount of blade surrounding the Spydiehole as the Charisma and I never saw any examples of those breaking. (Not saying it never happened, I just can’t recall ever seeing it myself)

I’ll be watching for the post release YouTube video of a Charisma that snapped while doing some light batoning!

As I have already stated, my concerns are not unfounded.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 11:00 ami'm confused why people are worried about this knife breaking. it's a small blade and it's only 1mm thick. this knife clearly isn't made for applying any kind of lateral force. it's made for slicing and opening your mail, not for building a cabin in the woods.
I will repeat; I broke a Z-cut, which is of similar stock thickness, in the same steel, across the centre of the Spydiehole - which is of a smaller diameter than the Charisma.
I was merely cutting a potato on plastic cutting board with it at the time - then it snapped!
Although I certainly would not undergo building a log cabin with a charisma, if I do decide to buy one, there may come a time when I may need to call on it to cut something. Must I pray to the knife gods that it will not wither and fall apart upon embarking on such a monumental challenge like the z-cut did? Or on this occasion has Spyderco invested a higher level of testing to ensure it will remain unbroken?
Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
I’m in for a Charisma. I love the design and I’m the target use case. Hopefully they keep it as reasonably priced as they say, and it doesn’t get what happened to the Reinhold Rhino, which got, granted, better steel and handle scales and Taichung quality, but increased in price by a LOT.
Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
I think the concern about breaking a Charisma blade is legit. I'm not worried, personally, but I'll definitely be more careful with this blade than all others in my collection. Much more careful, like paper and soft foods only. My experience with the Z-Cut, which cost me $19, is that the blade can feel disconcertingly fragile. I dislike the Z-Cut as a kitchen knife for this reason, despite glowing reviews from people on this forum who obviously know from kitchen knives.
All that said, I can hardly wait to get my hands on a Charisma. I've broken fishing gear, firearms, skis, bicycles, tools, etc., doing exactly what the items were meant to do. Sometimes things break.

So far, all my Spydies do a good job of opening the mail and none of them have been good for building a cabin in the woods. Therefore the Charisma should fit right in, performance-wise.
Love the edge shape and light weight in particular. Less than an ounce!!

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
Charisma certainly has my attention. I’ve been carrying an Astute lately and enjoying the slim longer blade. Charisma looks insane.
The frame lock tenacious is certainly interesting as well. Likely not something I would purchase (my existing Tenacious is working fine) but I can see it being desirable to a lot of people.

The public patents for this knife were shared on here in the past and there was a serrated version shown.

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
I'll reserve judgement until I've had one in hand, but 1mm stock on the charisma might be too thin for me. Never thought I'd say that about a production knife. The z-cut blade is already very flexible and at 1.3mm it's 30% thicker than the charisma.
Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
Perhaps no surprise that I´d like that!!
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):

-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
Reserving judgement is probably the way to approach this. I’m very happy to see Spyderco chase performance like this. Maybe they went too far, it’s something of a bold move for sure, but I prefer it over playing it safe. There’s no shortage on overbuilt knives, so however it holds up it’s a nice change of pace.Notsurewhy wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 9:38 pmI'll reserve judgement until I've had one in hand, but 1mm stock on the charisma might be too thin for me. I do own a z-cut, a knife I needed less than a week to put a very noticeable dent in, so I see where the skeptics are coming from, but I will judge the Charisma on its own merits.
Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report
The upcoming Catcherman LC200N Sprint Run also has a very thin blade of 0.07" (1.8mm).
