How About a Kiridashi

#1

Post by Scandi Grind »

OK, this might be one of the few things Spyderco doesn't make that I would love to buy from them, a Japanese Kiridashi knife. I saw one from Kanetsune and really want to get one eventually. I don't care much about steel really, but if it could be high carbon, well that's just me.

Anyone else think this would be cool?!

Wood handles would be nice, or Micarta maybe, but I would be down with plastic if that kept cost down.

i've thought about it a few times and wondered what existing handles they could work a kiridashi style blade into. i think it could be pretty cool.

Hi Scandi Grind,

I think you should check out the available Kiridashi's on the market. You can purchase a hand forged fancy made in Japan Kiridashi for $20+, even in carbon.

I don't think it's a market where we could be effective. Hard to innovate a "better" Kiridashi?

Ha ha, yeah, hard to argue with that.

Maybe if it was a Kiridashi folder, but then again, not sure the blade type would catch a lot of peoples interest and making it a folder would bump up the price.

Fred Perrin has a couple of lightweight folding Kiridashi knives available. I think they are made by Max Knives out of France.

I actually designed a folder using a kiridashi as the primary influence for both form factor and intended use. As a folder it departs from tradition but the influence is clearly there, in my opinion. I definitely think there is room in the general “EDC” market for that type of folder.

Wow. I had never seen a kiridashi. I would buy a folder in that arrangement the day it was released. That straight blade angled in that manner would be quite useful for certain tasks I frequently encounter in which bellied blades struggle. I carry a Yojimbo 2, which is fantastic, but there are times when the kiridashi angle would be better for me.

I had to look up Kiridashi. It looks like the sort of thing that could be whipped up in the garage in an afternoon. If you're not picky about steel, you could buy a blade blank or an old knife from a garage sale, and then use your bench grinder or angle grinder to create the shape your'e looking for. If you don't have a suitable chunk of wood for the handle, buy a junky old shovel from a garage sale.

I always thought a kiridashi blade in the Squarehead would be cool.

I pondered the folding kiridashi idea at one time and even brought it up here quite some time ago.

It's a tough knife shape to make conducive to a folder though. That's a lot of angle for the handle to have to cover.

But, as Sal said, it would be impossible for them to make any money on one, fixed or folder. There's highly sought after western custom makers who who will spit out the occasional forged welded or "high-end" steel kiridashi for like $150 or less.

Now that's a cool idea. Sort of a scaled up Exacto.

Serge Panchenko has designs that are very similar to a Squarehead or his own Dogtag design that use a kiridashi type blade. I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t love a “Spyderized” version of them.

I'm not sure if isn't mentioned just because it's too obvious, but there's always the Cold Steel Kiridashi

I have one of those Cold Steel Kiridashi folders. I don't carry it often as I find the pocket clip too wide.

Fred Perrin's take on a folding Kiridashi. There is a black-washed version as well.

The Cold Steel is a bit of a departure from an actual Kiridashi, but at the same time makes it probably much more practical as well. In the end it is kind of just a wharncliffe with an upward pointed edge, but that actually is a shape I really, really like.

The Civivi Ki-V was a design that caught my interest recently with a similar blade shape, Image

Could this be called a Kiridashi at this point, I guess you could, but there might not be any point. However, I am very attracted to this kind of design lately, whether it is really a Kiridashi at that point or not.
