Problems With ... AOL ??

#1

Post by Stevie Ray »

I'm just about done with AOL... :( Here's what happens:

1. I start with a new / clean hard drive
2. I connect to the web via cable modem
3. I load AOL 9.0 (really just for email & other stuff ... I don't need their internet connection)
4. Now .... only AOL web sessions work ...... my Microsoft Explorer sessions outside AOL are completely blocked
5. Any other software that touches the web outside of AOL are blocked too including the Microsoft Windows Update program

Anybody else ever experience this? I've been in touch with AOL and they don't have the answers .. Same experience twice over the last 6 months. To correct this nonsense, I've had to do a hard drive format and a complete reload of all my software. Takes 3 to 4 hours ... Major PITA.

4 & 5 don't surprise me... they'll do everything to force the user using their browser, you know the one with all the ads ;)
5 years ago when I was a AOL client, I had to download a crack to use a different browser... look for software like AOL Autoconnect.

Clarifying question, do you use AOL broadband?

If you don't actually use AOL for service you should change your account to "bring your own access" which lowers your monthly rate by about $10.

Aloha Stevie ray and Senate!

Good to "see" ya guys...

So...what provider, if I may ask, are you guys using now? I WAS just gonna upgrade to the AOL 9.0 but now I am a bit leary to do so...

God bless! ;)

Hey my man,

I really dislike AOL. Too many problems. You can use AIM for free and there are a ton of free email accounts available so...

I did a quick search and found the following regarding ISPs in your area:
