Spyderco Wolfspyder

#1

Post by dandan »

Hello everyone

I have recently joined the forums , so Hello all.

I have a few Spydrco folders - a Salt ladybug in a plain edge , a PM2 in Camo G10 , with a plain blade , and lastly I have one of Ray Mear's specials, the Wolfspyder.

I got one of these from his website , and got it shipped to me here in France. It is a good lock knife, like the PM2 and PM3. The blade is a good shape and a scandi grind, and the steel is top quality.

WOW , I love it. It is the right size for me . The PM2 was a bit big , so this is my EDC , and has been for months.
I have got a Ti clip on it instead of the original one. It now sits lower in my pocket. The clip was on my PM2 , as it fits both.

How many other members have one of these knives, and how do you rate them?

Hi Dandan, and welcome to the forum.

The Wolfspyder is a favourite of mine : it's small, tough and very nicely made. I did put a proper microbevel on mine, though.

I picked up a factory second at last year's sale and kind of wish I had bought another as well. It's an interesting little knife.

Hi Dandan,

welcome to our forum.

Quite bit of time, back and forth with prototypes, and refinments went into that design. Thanx for the kind words.

I wish it came in a good carbon steel and was a wee bit bigger.

Welcome to the forum friend. I like the Wolf Spyder design, I wasn't able to get one. It is very good. Me personally, I would like it if the blade was in the 3.5 to 4 inch length, but, it is very efficient as a cutting tool and I am most assured that it is excellent.

Agreed on the blade size, just a bit longer would be perfect.

Dear friends

Thanks for all your kind words and welcomes.

Yes I am very happy with this knife.Other knife carrying friends say it is a lovely shape. It is less not as wide as the PM2 , and so has a smaller profile that does not get caught up in my pocket.
I too have smoothed the edges to the handle , as they were too sharp. My Dremel type machine was good for that purpose.

Yes I have a Sharpmaker that I used for putting a nice razor edge on my Wolfspyder.

It cuts so well , and does not drag when cutting.

Here in rural France I sometimes have to use it at table in restaurants when cutting bread, or steaks.
No one cares about pulling out a knife in a restaurant, and most men carry one anyway (usually a French make ).

I not only sharpen our/my pocket and kitchen knives , but I also am the knife man for others who live nearby.

Glad you enjoy yours. WolfSpyder could compete with a BM940 and look much less aggressive.

I hope they could release a FFG version though.

The WolfSpyder has become one of my all-time favorites. Love that knife. I would love to see a FFG version--coupled with a solid G-10 backspacer vs. the steel standoffs. The open-back construction on the current model could create "hot spots" when whittling or other such tasks. A solid-backed handle would greatly improve this (IMO, at least).

Yes full flat grind would be great. I have a Wolfspyder as well and it is one if the most unique Spydercos for the fact that when closed the blade is completely encapsulated in the handle. Love my Wolf. I'll try the deep pocket clip as well.

Welcome to the Forum dandan

For my European friends here @dandan and @Nemo3000: I'm interested in Ti clips. Have you found any European store selling them?

Thanks

I have found mine (edited the titanium clips not the WolfSpyder) on Ebay. Waited for three months. They are American made and OK. :-)
Oh and I like to sand them for a smoother experience and a vintage feel.

I know it's bizarre but once used, it stout little sharp blade does wonder. It's always fun to drill and cut and whittle with this solid edge.
