Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?

Is that question what aggression is, or how aggression is achieved? I'm no expert, but aggression in an edge to me means the edge has a kind of "sticky" and biting feeling when pressed to the skin, where it seems to grab at the epidermis with barely any pressure at all. Sometimes if you cu...

And which has a much thinner grind and thinner stock so it cuts circles around the Ladybug. What kind of stockman? The Ladybug is already so thin, it's hard to imagine much thinner. Here are a few. Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I have not yet needed to condition the shapton 5k stone. When it's time would you recommend using one of my diamond plates, or something else? I'm very inexperienced when it cokes to flsttening and conditioning stones that wear faster because I've been using diamond plates and Spyderco ceramics bas...

What's your use for a Ladybug?

I remember buying a ZDP-189 Ladybug to get some experience with the steel, but didn't realize how small the knife was. I was expecting it to be a little more like the Dragonfly. So when I got it I was a bit like, "Well what am I gonna do with this?" The other day I found a little "Per...

Re: Straight Forward Comments About Spyderco's From Another Forum

I've always been a function over form kind of guy. I remember talking to a friend about Spyderco and saying that I thought they just looked goofy. But once he started talking about things like the blade geometry and steel composition, rather than how centered or strong the lock up was, I knew we app...

Your caliper's readout is confusing me... Is that 735 ten-thousandths?

https://i.imgur.com/bKOb8Bg.png Figure 1b: a CPM 15V 400 grit Silicon Carbide edge, shows signs of fatigue at apex due to adhesive wearing. That actually looks pretty identical to what I'm seeing on my edges through the 60x-120x loupe. As far as corrosion goes, I had an unfortunate accident with so...

Re: Share your experience with 15V

I wouldn't get too obsessed with getting every single grit progression. Even when you are buying a water stone, it is not intended for you to buy every single stone in the series. But the idea is to buy the grit jumps that you need for your preference or task. A good coarse stone and a good medium ...

Re: Share your experience with 15V

You get what you pay for. Bonded stones are completely different than electroplated stones. Just like with knife steel, It's not just the carbides or with stones the diamonds that are so important, but also the matrix that supports them. With electroplated stones It is not a renewable surface. Once...

Re: Share your experience with 15V

23% of the volume in the 15v is harder than ceramic. When shaping a sub micron area at the apex it's nice to be able to cut all features to shape rather than only 77% of it. Use bonded diamond/cBN. Don't waste money on atoma/DMT Those work best for flattening ceramic stones. This isn't 2003 anymore...

Re: Share your experience with 15V

I feel like a lot of factory edges get some chipping, micro chipping. Can't really judge a steel until you put it to the stones...NOT talking about medium/fine Sharpmaker rods either. 2 of my 3 knives in my personal favorite Rex45 had some chipping to the factory edges. Once reprofiled and slimmed ...

Re: Share your experience with 15V

As far as corrosion goes, I had an unfortunate accident with some bleach with my Manix. I really didn't like it, so I ended up forcing a patina. https://i.ibb.co/TvXKcbK/PXL-20230714-215019875-NIGHT-2.jpg https://i.ibb.co/yhr7vWw/PXL-20230715-212716154-NIGHT-2.jpg The steel has held up fine for me. ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I don't strop. I touch up on the same stones I mentioned above. I never really got the point of stropping. I always just assumed I sucked at it or it is just placebo, because it never does anything for me. But I tend to stay on the coarser end of the spectrum for edge finishes as well, so maybe tha...

Re: Elastic Ceramic. Wow!

Is the hype behind this one really going to be that high? I was kind of surprised by the way people slept on the K294 and AEB-L Mules. I haven't really been hearing anyone talking about the elastic ceramics.

Re: 'Micro serrations' sharpening question

3) Sharpening to a fine, high polish finish and then doing a few swipes on a medium-coarse stone I can't say that I have tried other methods, so I wouldn't call it a preference , but this is what I do. Usually I will go from a 2k or 5k Kuromaku, and then to a 600 Mesh DMT. I think--though I have ab...

Re: Spyderco K294 - Kizer 10V Comparison Testing (BESS Data Included)

Well I decided to cut until I got into the 400-500 BESS range, and I am glad I did, because it showed that the initial results in the high 300s were just anomalous--you can see it in the spike in the charts below. With the rest of the testing I didn't do BESS testing every 100 cuts, because with tho...
