Another run of Whale Rescue blade is needed.

Here is a recent example of a modified Spyderco Salt blade standing in:

None have been available in the retail chain for years, and there are other uses besides the eponymous one. Equipping anti-bomb robots, for example.

I’m kinda surprised they didn’t make it a “made to order” offering, especially given its usage. Even if they required you to buy more than one of them at a time.

I would definitely buy a few. I just missed them also and I've regretted not buying a couple when I had the chance. They would get a lot of use in my world!

They are cool, but I don’t need one personally. For those who actually rescue entangled whales, this tool is a godsend.

NOAA has several of the Whale Rescue Blades. I know because I worked with them (Edited to clarify, I worked with them as their contact here at Spyderco). What's shown in the video on Instagram is known as the Flying Knife. They serve different purposes. The Flying Knife is used typically when the whale is still in motion. The Whale Rescue Blade is typically used when the whale is more stationary, and they can get the blade under the material that's entangling the whale.

That's very cool! Thanks for sharing your expertise. I've worked support for whale researchers but I've never been involved in a rescue like that.

Neither have I, but we (Spyderco) were and are honored to do our part to support their work. Talk about dedicated people - they're truly something special in all the best ways.

I don’t have a noble purpose, I just want to make a modified machete.

Hi Fireman,

So what you want is a Spyderco Machete? With teeth?

A Spyderco Machete WOULD be cool indeed, but with teeth?! .. even I as an SE guy think Sal was rather kidding with the "teeth" part - ?! (unless those teeth are perhaps on the spine, additionally to the main Machete chopping plain edge on the "business" side of the blade...)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

In a word, yes. Put a machete style handle on it and it will be a useful tool that will be a more efficient cutter of grasses and some shrubs. I will be happy to help with the testing 😍 It could make a good agricultural knife for harvesting lettuces, broccoli, cauliflower etcetera. Here in California we grow a lot of vegetables that are still hand harvested.

It especially would be good if the serrations were canted off towards the handle as to grip the fibers better. LC200N would be my choice of steel.

A plain edge on the convex side and serrated on the concave side would be advantageous in a machete form. People would go ape over that. I’ll take 2. ZA larpers would be the largest demographic

Needs a different handle but you can see how this could be useful

I have to admit that I would love a 12 inch salt-series machete, but maybe separate from the Whale Rescue Blade. I’d buy both. 🙂

Has Spyderco ever released an actual machete?? I'd be very interested, use my Kershaw Camp 10 all the time. Would love a Spyderco!
