Where Have all the Calys Gone?

#1

Post by Skidoosh »

I rotate between a sage 5 and Caly 3 in Hap40. I love the compression lock but nothing seems to fit my hand like the Caly 3. As I see some older models (GB2) come out in newer steels I'm wondering when we could see a caly LW in magnacut or K390. I know its hard with a Seki manufacturer but this is still high on my wish list.

I believe Sal has a new full sized (4") calypso in the works. I think I saw it mentioned it's lightweight.

Would be cool to see a new Caly3 but the UKPK has eclipsed it at this point IMO. One of the few designs that benefits from the removal of the locking mechanism.

^ Politely but firmly disagree.

The Caly 3 is near the top of the 'cult classics' in the survey results I'll be releasing tomorrow. It may be gone, but it's far from forgotten. It is an aficionado's model.

Yeah, there are a lot of us who would love to see it come back, maybe even with an upgraded steel.

Like Skidoosh, I often "make do" with a Sage 5 in M4 while waiting for a return of the Caly.

I agree that the UKPK is a wonderful iteration of the Caly3. I would like to see the Caly3 with a Golden back lock or the same back lock as the Chaparral. I very much like the Caly3 as a pocket knife, but I am scared to carry mine anymore since I can't get them any longer.

The choil prevents the knife from being closed accidentally while open and the knife can be closed one-handed without the kind of risk a lockback entails. For those reasons (and that you cannot use ZDP in an agricultural context) I've used the UKPK more than any other knife I've owned- because when you have to prune 5 or 600 plants at a time you will cut yourself if the act of locking the knife is in any way a hindrance.

I voted for it in the survey. Fully agree that it's a classic and if I collected Spydercos I'd definitely own one- it's probably my favorite Glesser design and Moki is a unique OEM in Spyderco's lineup. But as you said it's an aficionado's model. There's no iteration of the caly that I could daily myself or wholeheartedly recommend to a non-enthusiast, whereas I've lent or gifted several UKPKs because it's quite literally foolproof.

I preferred the UKPK to Caly 3 too back when I owned both. Lighter, simpler, better index choil, deeper carry, etc. There's a lot of love about the simple elegance of the ukpk.

In each new Reveal I hope to see the upcoming (?) Caly 3.5 LW.

To me the clearly more appealing design than the "3", just looking at the specs :

- The 3.5 has a PM2 sized cutting edge in a Delica sized handle, while still offering a choil.
- The 3 is only 5 mm shorter in carry, but with an 11 mm shorter edge than the 3.5...
Seems like Sal likes the 3.5 too quite a bit... ;) viewtopic.php?t=92569#p1627937

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

They have to start making the base model first. The Caly 3.5 LW is on the horizon. I don't think I've heard talk of the Caly 3 LW but I would think that'll come eventually

As far as I can figure it:

1997, Calypso Jr. C52.
1998, Calypso C54.
2004, UKPK C94.
2006, Caly 3 C113.
2010, Caly 3.5 C144.

For those of you who dream of a LW Caly 3, it's kinda-sorta out there with the Caly Jr., which is a phenomenal knife if you ask me. I wish I'd stocked up with a half dozen of them, when I had the chance. Sadly, I only have two, and like Doc said above, I'm worried about carrying either for fear of losing them.

I didn't realize that the UKPK came before the Caly 3, thought it was the other way around.
Caly 3 is such a great, thin, working carry I hope for a few sprint runs sometime.

Have you tried the Spyderedge Salt UKPK? It might work well for you.

Paula Cole sang the thread title in my head, now she's singing it in your head too.

I've contemplated spending too much on a used caly 3 since I enjoy the ukpk, but a Caly 3.5 lw sounds like something that would cause me to purge half of my collection.

You and me both. Caly3.5 is one of Sal's most refined designs. I only wish they decide to solve the lock rock issue. It would be ideal if they moved the LW Caly3.5 production to Golden or Taichung.

Ha, me too! Except I didn’t know the singer’s name. Thanks for that.

for me personally I’ve never had any troubles closing spydercos lockback models one handed. A lock is an integral part of spyderco’s folding knives for me as a safety feature, despite a finger choil grip which works against the force of closure. I still don’t want a choil accidentally pinching down on my finger. Though one might say the calypso series is best suited as lighter duty edc tools I feel like I’ve definitely put my calys in a situation where the security of a lock was a great benefit to the task. I’m also just a huge fan mechanically of the mid lockback.

I love when this forum goes on a caly discussion. This knife series has been much under looked. But I think the minority who ‘get it’ truly get it.
