Forum Exclusive Kickstarter

I may be barking up a tree already barked up (…🤔 that sounded better in my head), but has anyone ever looked into doing a kickstarter/crowdfunding campaign for a SUPER LIMITED EDITION DREAM SPYDERCO SPRINT? (In my head I’m reading that like an exuberant Japanese game show host)

After reading through Vivi’s C95 thread I can’t help but think we could test the waters with a not-for-our-profit kickstarter campaign and try to commission our own sprint/exclusive of a classic model like the C95. I have no idea how to go about doing this, but where there’s a will there’s usually a way.

Similar to Kickstarter, Spyderco has actually done exclusives through “Massdrop” the past - The Supergold Delica and Endura. They used Supergold blade steel and a gold colored lockbar.

Delica
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... usive/1797

Endura
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... usive/1796

If I recall correctly, they took a while to accumulate enough sales in order to actually commit to running these Exclusives.

I would definitely be interested in it, but it would be tough to get enough forum members to agree on the knife, steel, handle color/material, DLC, locking, slipjoint for EU friends, etc.

It would be easier if Sal just said this is what I am offering you want it or not. Hahaha
Endura AUS-8, Manix 2 S30V, Alcyone BD1N, PM2 Micarta Cruwear, Native 5 Maxamet (2nd), Para 3 Maxamet (2nd), Magnacut Mule, Z-Wear Mule, BBB 15V Manix 2, REC PM3 10V Satin, Dragonfly Salt 2, GB2 M4.

Yep! I got the Delica. I occasionally think about moving it on but it's one you don't see very often

The kickstarter has been brought up a few times. I agree with WilliamMunny, it would tough to get enough people to agree on the same knife, features etc

I have the SG Endura. It took over a year to arrive, iirc.

🤔 hmm, this warrants further consideration. If mass appeal is what’s needed to entice a wide enough demographic to buy in then a true one-off in some respect might be the order of the day. I don’t mind waiting if it’s for something really special.

I've seen a lot of requests for a powerlock. I hope we get one for everyone who wants it.

Wouldn't it link Spyderco's name and reputation to a project led by people that aren't working for Spyderco? That could be "dangerous" for their public image if there's any issue.

Depends on who's handling the kickstarter 😅🤣

I suppose we’d have to make it clear that we were commissioning an exclusive run if we reached the goal total.

From the suggestions so far, you'd be commissioning a Flash Batch. Good luck with that.

"Problematic" doesn't begin to cover it. "Unprecedented" would be much closer.
People keep asking for an entirely new model (yes, a C95 with a Powerlock is an entirely new model) with all the attendent developement costs (prototyping, testing, refining, etc.) for a one-time exclusive run. And although they won't admit it, they expect Spyderco to foot the bill for the R&D instead of charging $800 or more per piece to recover those costs. The crowdfunded Supergold Endura and Delica were basically sprints - different steel and colors in regular production models. Not the same thing at all.
