Sharpmaker rods ....grit?

The Sharpmaker ceramic rods:
What is the grit size of the Fine and ExFine rods?
I use a "diamond system" to reset my angles but to maintain, use the Sharpmaker and strop. What are grit size of the ceramics.

There was a thread about a year ago that had the approximate grit sizes for the FINE, ULTRAFINE and Medium stones. That Ultra-Fine is the one I like to use to put the final touches on virtually any sharpening jobs I encounter.

Even the medium/gray stone is rated finer that you would think. I just wish that at some point Spyderco would come out with one really coarse stone for rapid stock removal on that 204 Sharpmaker kit. It would sure make using the Sharpmaker a lot less time consuming.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

Ceramic stones are not graded in grits like sandpaper, where the abrasive particles pass through a specific size of mesh to be sized. We also use the same basic size of abrasive particles in all our stones. Their final coarseness is then carefully controlled through the other materials in the ceramic (“carriers”), the firing process, and, in some cases, abrasive grinding processes to achieve a final finish. By comparing the scratch patterns of sharpened edges to those sharpened by conventional abrasives, the following grit-size comparisons may be made:

ULTRA FINE -- 2,000 grit
FINE -- 1,200 grit
MEDIUM -- 600 grit

What about the CBN/Diamond stones?

Most of our diamond and CBN stones/rods are 400 mesh. The double-sided CBN flat stone is 400 on one side, 800 on the other.
