Larger Spyderhole models

#1

Post by Grza »

Hi all,

This may be a silly and obvious question, but is there a list around somewhere of which models have the bigger spyderhole? I have big hands, and I find I vibe way better with the 0.55 hole rather than the 0.5. I just bought a Rockjumper SE and I really like it, partly because of that. I know about the Para series, and the Manix, I'm pretty sure the Shaman does, and I believe that some of the Salt series does as well.

(It's the only thing I would change about my Yojimbo 2. If I wasn't convinced it would somehow screw it up, I'd consider getting it widened.)

Thanks,

Hi Welcome,

I don't know of a list of opening hole sizes by model. However, I believe all the Salt and rescue knives have the larger opening hole. I believe the Military and Paramilitary also have the larger hole. Hopefully others will chime in with more models.

I also don't know of any precompiled lists that have this information but, for another reason, this is information I’ve wanted to learn for a long time as well.

Spydiewiki has hole diameter info, but it's probably not compiled as nicely as you'd want.
For example, go here and scroll all the way to the two tables at the bottom of the page.

Definitely a good resource! It would be time consuming but certainly possible to go through and compile a list using Spydiewiki alone.

The OP may find Spydiewiki useful when researching particular knives as well.

Friend, get yourself a Military.

I honk the Stretch also has an extra-large 14mm hole.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I was wondering how you'd honk a Stretch. :grin-sweat I had all sorts of terrible images in my head about you. :grin-sweat

The Salt series, Rescue, and Militaries have larger holes. I have fairly large, but very thick hands and I get along with all of the hole sizes, but will admit the Military is so much easier.

Idk? The hole in my Manix seems to be as large or larger than the rest of my Spydercos.

I took a quick look at some of mine and the Stretch 2, Military, Para Military 2, and Shaman all have the big honkin’ Round Holes. 🤣

I used to have a boss years ago and when describing something big he frequently used the adverb “honkin’” in front of what he was describing. 😉

I’m fairly sure the Manix 2 XL has a honkin’ big spydie hole, although I’d have to dig my callipers out to check before I bet my wife on it. It has a honkin’ big everything else, so it would be in keeping with the rest of the design.

Just checked - the Manix XL does, as does the Yojumbo… which I’m now sporting in my pyjamas pocket, because you never know when you might need to absolutely eviscerate something with extreme prejudice 😂

Biggest hole I know about is on the FRN Squarehead. It’s awesome.

I believe the Squarehead has the largest Spyderhole of any Spyderco model. Which I’ve always found amusing because it’s such a small knife.

This is one of the main reasons I was interested in a list. I’ve always wanted to confirm whether or not it actually is the largest Spyderhole ever used. :thinking

I have an old pair of calipers laying somewhere. It might just be a matter of actually measuring for myself some day.

It's kind of surprising that the hole diameter for each model isn't in the catalog or the technical specs on the website. IMO this information can be important when deciding if a model is suitable for you or not. The hole diameter isn't a huge deal for me but I can see how it might be for someone else

Honestly not a big fan of the large holes, it significantly weakens the blade across that area with that much material being gone, as well as any further weakening caused from the actual cutting that area out of the blade stock.

Sure, folding knives aren't intended to be heavy use/prying tools, but the vast majority of broken spydie blades I've seen were directly across the hole.

Any slight imperfections in the steel or heat treatment in that area is going to get exposed much more often than normal due to that weakness in the design.

Not saying I dislike the idea of the holes in general, I just wish they were smaller. Most are unnecessarily large IMHO.
