yojimbo trainers

Post by ladybug93 »

i've been waiting for these to restock for probably two years now. with the training aspect being so important for sd knives, i'm surprised these aren't more of a priority to stock, even just occasionally and in lower quantities. i've seen stock of other trainers come and go, but the yo2 trainers seem to be mia. should we expect to see these again sometime? i don't think this is a problem with insufficient patience on my part... it's really been such a long time.

I always find it...curious that so few trainers are available for knives designed for SD. I'll leave it at that.

The 90’s bud K knife magazine days are over. I think guns and knife jewelry is all the rage? I am guilty of a little knife jewelry myself.

Maybe knife stigmas are high enough that the SD guys just teach mace spray?

No! I’m agreeing with you. If you make a SD knife, trainers should be available. Otherwise the mantra “train, train, train” rings a bit hollow. I didn’t want my post to turn into a mini rant, so I left it short.

thanks for the response, mike. i'm not sure what you are referring to though when you say my observation is correct. are you agreeing they've been oos for years, are you agreeing that there is too little demand to keep them stocked, or are you just agreeing that training is important?

any idea if we'll see more any time soon? i definitely still want one for training. thanks!

Looks like Country Knives has them. They charge full MSRP, but they often have hard to find models and exclusives/sprints that are sold out elsewhere. They've been a Certified Spyderco retailer since the 80s.

That's odd that they are so low stock. It's also odd that not many people have stock on them. Sometimes you find that one place has stock and no one else does.

I have one and I saw it sitting on my shelf a week or two ago and I think I forgot I even had it. I have the (non spyderco) aluminum fixed blade one and I have the trainer blade that one of the MBC guys made that I could never get working.

I don't think they have produced them in a while. Hopefully this is a temporary hiccup because the availability of OEM trainers has been a strength of spyderco compared to many other companies

Yes, I am agreeing with you that they've been out of stock for about two years. Yes, trainers typically sell more slowly than live blades, because very few people take training seriously. As such, demand is comparatively low. And, yes, without training, your chances of using any weapon successfully are slim.

Unfortunately, I have no idea when we'll see more production.

thank you, sir. i appreciate your response and engagement here. for whatever my voice counts, i'd like to see them restocked. i need one.

to increase sales... i wonder if it would be possible to lower the profit margin for trainers to encourage more people to buy them. spyderco could even offer a combo purchase option to pick up a trainer and a standard yojimbo together for a slightly reduced cost if they didn't want to reduce the cost of the trainer itself. i think that would increase sales for both and, more importantly, increase the likelihood that people will actually train. just spitballing from the peanut gallery. at any rate, we can't buy them at all if they're not there, so i hope that piece gets remedied asap.

ladybug, as I was reading this thread I was thinking a combination purchase option would be great. I agree that those purchasing for self defense would like to have both.

There is a little solution to the ones that are cash-strapped.

Trace your YO2 or whatever you have, onto a piece of decent wood, like maple, or even pine at a pinch. Your choice.

Shape the piece of wood till all the bits that do not look like your knife, are removed. Whittle away till it "feels right."
Please make sure the tip is rounded with a BIG blunt profile.

Wrong weight? Of course. Cannot practice opening and closing? Tough!

But you can drill holes and weight it till it is close enough. Use your imagination.

I did this with the Police and Civilian models using Pakkawood.

Then play nicely with others... :bug-red-white :cheap-sunglasses :star-struck
