A tale of two PM2s

#1

Post by jalcon »

I have two brand new PM2s. Regular S45V. Both from a well known reputation knife dealer. Look at the tangs of these knives. On knife 1 one you see how smooth it is and polished. On knife 2...not so much and the bottom doesn't have a straight clean edge like the first does. Now here's the funny thing..I much prefer knife two. Better action, better lockup...but what's up with that tang...

Could you guys with PM2s, PLEASE post the same pic of yours?

Your PM2s have tails? Hmmm…that’s one of the few instances I’m which I’d probably return..

I’ve had individuals like your top picture. One of my P4s has a similar issue with the liner in the same area. It doesn’t affect the action and I only think about it when someone talks about having a similar issue so I don’t really pay it much mind, personally

The top one is the smooth, clean cut one...the way its supposed to be....doesn't it show up for you that way?

Are the date codes close or the same? Maybe you have one before a tool change and one right after a tool change?

Grrrreat. Yeah I've had probably 10 PM2s over the years...only have these two now though. They have all varied in action and slight bladeplay...finally I got one that has great both...but then I notice this fml.

Same here with my 3 PM2's and my 4 PM3's. And I suspect you'd see that little notch (if that's what's causing the OP concern) on all of them because it's a ramp for the detent ball to ride in when opening and closing.

Not talking about the notch haha. Talking about the bottom bortion that is supposed to be a clean straight edge.

if this is the case, then what's the problem? if the action and lockup are the best you've had, then this is nothing more than a barely noticeable cosmetic flaw. i do think these knives cost too much to have issues like this, but it doesn't seem like it's worth worrying about if it's the best one you've had.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

I certainly do respect your "problem" and that the way that tang looks bothers you!

But that said and honestly:

I personally would most likely never even have noticed that tiny "imperfection" (I´d even argue if it IS that or rather just a variation) - which furthermore can only be seen with a closed blade and very thoroughly and deliberately looking at a specific area.

An if I noticed it, it would not bother me at all - I mean, everything works perfectly fine, right? Even exceptionally fine as you say.

I´d even say a slight variation makes a knife more unique and personal, more "your" knife... don´t know if that helps, but perhaps you could try and see the "issue" more from that point of view?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Seems to be chatter from dull tooling.

It's quite common in manufacturing.

Nothing to worry about unless it effects function.

It will more than likely smooth out over time due to lock bar friction.

Thanks. You know, I'm pretty OCD about things I spend some money on. Everything I buy whether it be a knife, gun, you name it...I find something wrong on. It's like a mental curse. Def something I gotta work on!

Thanks. Yeah I was more concerned about the bottom part not being a clean straight line, but being jagged and having that burr on the bottom left. I'm not sure if that will effect anything down the line...I'm not as familiar with the inner workings of the knife as some on here.

There is inexpensive and there is perfection. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum and every manufacturer needs to find their place on the spectrum. Their balance point if you will.

The tang on that knife is only a problem if you want it to be. Otherwise, it’s fine and will have no affect on function at all.
