Stone washed blades
I must say I wish spyderco would offer more knives with the stone wash finish on Their blades. It hides scratches well and just looks nicer imo. The new 15v manix blade finish looks awesome. Same with their s30v shaman. It seems like very few models come with this stone wash ....not sure why?
Re: Stone washed blades
Some of us can only dream of what the 15V blade looks like......but I do love Stonewashed myself.
Re: Stone washed blades
I agree but, since they don't, I'm about to try my hand. It looks so easy I think it's probably worth a try.
Re: Stone washed blades
The current regular manix finishe and the pm3 standard finish are really nice too. Hard to beat the beauty of the taichung ones like the swayback and drunken as well.
Re: Stone washed blades
i prefer stonewashed blades instead of satin and i wish there were more of them also. i need to just learn how to do it on my own.

Re: Stone washed blades
I agree. I love the stonewash finish.
Re: Stone washed blades
I have stonewashed a few blades with a Thumler's tumbler and ceramic tumbling media, and while it works well, I've noticed the spine-to-edge scratch patterns that come on most Spyderco blades are still quite visible beneath. My shop stonewash doesn't look like my store-bought stonewashed blades, even after 8 hours of tumbling. I am certain, to get a really good stonewash, you have to start with a polished blade. And that would add a fair bit of cost for the mfgr, or time for the do-it-yourselfer.
Also, if you're washing your own, the blade markings and spyder will fade considerably. Only under the right light can I see that my MagnaCut mule is indeed inscribed MagnaCut.
If you're doing your own, you'll want to add some water and a little detergent, which makes the tumbling much more efficient, compared to dry tumbling.
But yeah, it's my favorite finish by far. Especially for knives with Kydex sheaths, which can do a number on the spine-to-edge scratch pattern by adding tip-to-heel scratches from insertion and retraction.

Re: Stone washed blades
I like how easy the stonewashed blades wipe clean, and enjoy how they look with a high polish.
However, I love seeing the grind lines and a nice bright Satin is a thing of beauty. It's also easier to refinish by hand if needed. I go back and forth... It really depends on the quality of the finish more than one over the other for me.

Re: Stone washed blades
I agree, I would love to see more stonewashed blades from Spyderco. It looks fantastic on my Maxamet PM2, and the stonewash from Taichung on the Slysz Bowie and Swayback is just beautiful.
Re: Stone washed blades
They've said in the past satin is a premium finish so go with that. Stonewash is a cheaper finish.
Re: Stone washed blades
I really like the finish on my new Swick.

Re: Stone washed blades
I asked this question once.
I was told that the even scratch pattern on the satin blades was considered a sign of quality high craftsmanship because of the difficulty in achieving said pattern.
I still prefer a stone washed blade.

Re: Stone washed blades
Gonna be a bit contrarian on this one, I really enjoy the satin/belt finish. But a good stonewash is still nice too. Just not my top favorite. I enjoy the stonewash on my Maxamet PM2 but don't really find myself wishing for more stonewashed blades.

Re: Stone washed blades
Stonewashed blades and high hollow ground knives are areas I wish Spyderco would address. I would be compelled to consider more Spyderco purchases. Instead, I find myself languishing and waiting on more MagnaCut models or different steel developments mostly. Compelling new designs seem to come around slowly.
To me, it seems polished stonewashed blades are easier to wipe off moisture than the satin blades in the battle against corrosion. Some like coated blades for this, but I don't care for the additional drag.

Re: Stone washed blades
Personally i prefer the rougher Satin finishes of my Rex-45 g10 Manix 2 or my old Manixes.
I find them hiding scratches better then stonewash but at the same time i also had satin finishes like on the polestar that were very fine and all scratched up after cutting a few boxes so satin is the best hit or worst mis for me.

Re: Stone washed blades
The simple S30V Native 5 lightweight has their stonewash. I love how they do it. The surface is amazingly smooth and it gets a bit of reflection. Too bad I sold it !
But it's even different on the Maxamet blades, my favorite is still the one found on the N5 LW S30V and then the Taïchung stonewash.
Since most of my knives are in S110V, Rex45, K390 and all I mostly have satin.
I'd love to see some stonewashed K390 from Spyderco !
