Goo on the Edge - How to Manage

#1

Post by Bolster »

Seems I frequently have adhesive goo on the edges of the Spyders I carry and use. I usually try to wipe it away with isopropyl alcohol (or acetone if necessary) on a Kleenex, but have cut myself more than once doing that. There must be a better way to de-goo the edge. If there is, please share.

Lightly strop on a cloth/paper soaked in acetone is my go-to

I didn't believe in Goo Gone until I started taking photos of my knives. Still haven't found anything that works as well.

I have a good scrub brush I like to use for this. Nice stiff bristles, and the rubber end is great too. The reach makes sure that you don't cut yourself.

If that doesn't work, I try isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth.

If that doesn't work, I apply some goo gone and let is sit for a minute before wiping off.

If that doesn't work, you might as well break out the belt sander.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I use alcohol on a dedicated microfiber cloth, wiping from spine to edge. It usually does the trick. If not, scrubbing with an old toothbrush (or someone else's ;) ) works wonders.

I use Goo Gone. It's impressive stuff. Put some on a cloth or paper towel, and it will wipe the adhesive residue off a blade like warm butter.

WD-40 also works great due to its high solvent volume, but it's not as safe or pleasant to use.

I typically use alcohol, or WD-40.

I use the same stuff I use to lubricate the knife. Any kind of oil. Just let it sit and then wipe off with a clean cloth and a bit of pressure

Cotton ball with nail polish remover (acetone) and always wipe down/off the blade and never sideways along the edge, that's how you get cut.

Like David suggests, cotton balls work great. I typically take a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol from a dispenser I have and set the edge along a table and lightly rub each side. Cotton ball is fibrous enough to protect you fingers.

Yep wipe down perpendicular to the edge, not parallel. I get 99% medical grade isopropyl alcohol from Amazon. Works great. And it evaporates after use, food safe.

place the tissue on a table and then rub the blade on it like you're stropping it. I've found that reasonable effective and it's a lot safer than having the tissue in your hand. I'd also recommend just about anything over tissues since they tend to rip and make a mess.

I use WD-40 most, chiefly because alternatives (named above) aren’t in the garage where most of my goo is waiting to accumulate.

When I’m breaking down boxes, I spray WD-40 once goo hinders cutting. After letting it work for maybe a minute, I let the next cut or three wipe it and the emulsified goo right off.

I keep some of those disposable thick blue shop towels on hand and wipe the blade with some WD-40. Pick some up from Harbor Freight along with a can of WD-40 and the quad side diamond bench sharpener and you won’t spend $20.

WD40 or Flitz, and some old rags.
