Keep or Return? Manix 2 G10 S30V

#1

Post by _centurio_ »

Hello together,

I wanted to ask you about your opinions.

I just recieved my new Manix 2.

Blade centering is perfect. No bladeplay but absolute drop falling action when releasing the lock. So that is great.

What I do not find so great is that the edge bevels are not the same size (different angles) and the factory grind of the edge bevel is wavy (sequenced), I guess duo to robot grinding.

The thickness behind the edge bevel is 0,6 - 0,65mm. I guess that is because the bevels are relatively wide. Nevertheless I would like to have it thinner.

What would you do?

Thanks and Best regards,
Oliver.

That's what I would do. If the profiling really bothers you, and returning it for another is relatively simple, then return it. But, I tend to just reprofile.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not worth the hassle of returning it. Keep it, use it, and enjoy it. It's an easy fix when it becomes time to reprofile

Given that it’s a working model, I would reprofile and use the snot out of it

this is my vote as well. if I liked everything else about the knife, well, I'd be reprofiling it with a wonky grind or not.

If the lock and pivot action are spot on, I'd roll with it. All of these issues will be sharpened away with time. If it was strictly a connector's piece it would matter more but if it's a user just roll with it, you got a good one where it counts.

seriously not trying to gaslight or be rude, but i'm not seeing anything abnormal or wrong here. maybe i'd have to see it myself to get it, but even slightly uneven grinds i've had haven't ever given me any issues in use.

i'd like to understand what the issue is here if someone is willing to explain. if it's just paying this much and getting something less than perfect, i kind of get that. if there's a performance issue, i'd like to understand.

If it really bothers you, send it back. I'd just reprofile it and use it myself.

Since this isn’t a warrantable issue, I would hesitate to return it. If you don’t like it and returning is easy, go for it.

I don’t give a blanket “just reprofile it” because Manixes are often already too thick behind the edge (BTE) to start with, and reprofiling for looks will just make the BTE measurement that much thicker prematurely.

I don't pay much attention to factory edges, myself. I sharpen my knives to my own preferences. So I'd keep it.

If you use it you’re gonna need to sharpen it, and once you sharpen it a couple times the factory edge is a moot point. I vote keep!

Is that a stonewash finish?

EDIT: I had thought the Manix comes with Satin finish, but was wrong.

Thank you so much for the replies and opinions.

I just checked the blade play again and unfortunately there developed quite a big amount of horizontal play. It can not be fixed, the bushing measurements do not allow that.

I am quite disappointet at that moment. I had an all black Manix 2 G10 which I sold recently. With that one I had no problems with blade play. My Rex 45 Shaman is the exact opposite, the bushing is a lot smaller so I can tighten the pivot screws to the point you can not even move the blade (which I like a lot more because you can adjust to the level you like and use lock tite).

So I will send it back and try another Manix 2 specimen, hopefully with better specifications...

I’d keep it. When it’s time for the first sharpening just reprofile it. A lot of 5he time the knife feels more “mine” after I’ve spent some time reprofiling it.
