Poll: Can you middle finger flick a Native 5?

#1

Post by Kale »

I love my black-coated Rex-45 Native 5 and can spydie flick it. I find it more secure, since it allows me to grasp the scales between my thumb and forefinger. It fails maybe 10-20% of the time, but my self esteem can take the hit... (flick of the wrist solves the problem)

My main purpose in asking this question is wondering if the satin uncoated blades (which I prefer, but have yet to try) are equally easy to middle finger flick.

Thanks in advance... any and all discussion welcome!

I have a bare Native 5 LW in REX45 and used to have its heavyweight sister.
Both are easy to flick open with my size 10.5 hands.

I only have one N5 ,a PJ LW in DLC. It took me quite a while of breaking in, but I can easily spydie flick it open with my relatively small-medium hands.

My Native 5 Salt middle flicks easy every time.

My Rex45 G10 will also but not every time.

Neither has blade play and I have not adjusted any pivots.

All except my native 5 salt. I actually can flick this one too but it has to be clean and lubed which it never is.

The only spydie that I cant flick without wrist action is the manix 2 backlock. Mine might be a little tight but it does not like to flick.

Yes but the small size makes me have to focus on the grip and "setup" more than is natural so it's only a boredom fidget action for me.

If I flick open a knife, it's with my thumb only. I'll admit that the middle finger opening technique never even occurred to me until after I saw a video of someone doing it. Congratulations to those with the dexterity to pull it off!

Backlock flicking is definitely an advanced technique. I Imagine it’s easier for folks with big hands. Me? I just cut myself about half the time, so not a go-to method for me.

The only knives I can’t middle finger flick, don’t provide access to the Spydiehole on that side of the knife.

I can't middle-flick any Spydie. Beat my hands up way too much when I was younger, dexterity is not my forte.

I never try to flick my N5's open. Just use my thumb for the slow roll. Never felt at a loss despite the lack of flickitness!

My Endela, yeah, thumb flick. I never really liked the Spydie flick on any of my knives.

Love my Mint DLC M4 N5, love all my N5's.

I don't care to or try to middle finger flick my folders. I keep the pivot fairly tight. Tight enough that they don't drop free when I press the lockbar, but loose enough where they drop with a slight flick of the wrist while holding the lockbar down. I always dial the pivot screw in to this tension as soon as I get a new knife.

I still don't understand when people talk about the whole break in period stuff. There is a pivot screw that will dial everything in to your liking without having to wait for it to break in.

I don't flick open the back locks because I don't like the lock faces bashing together. I also don't like lock rock. So no flicky of the N5s for me

Hardly ever deploy any knife with a flick when I’m going to use it. It’s just something I do for the “challenge” when I need a distraction, so backlocks and slip joints are probably my favorites for that stuff.
Both my CF S90V and my FRN Salt are flickable, but they take some determination. The CF is not harder to flick than being a viable mode of deployment for regular use. The salt is not practical to flick for regular use, IMO.

I voted for the wrong thing.... A work day can kill a brain pretty well sometimes (especially my work (and maybe my brain?)) !

I can middle finger flick any of my Native 5 (and the OG). I just never owned a coated N5.

No option for "I don't flick my knives, middle finger or otherwise"?

In general, I don't flick my knives. On rare occasions I've done it with my PM 2's, Para 3's, and my Caribbean. In those instances, I've used either my thumb or my index finger. I have medium-sized hands, but using the middle finger feels unnatural to me.

IMO, habitually flicking knives with ANY type of lock accelerates wear and tear, and gradually loosens tolerances. Back locks, liner locks, comp locks, frame locks, Axis locks, etc. And possibly even CBBL.

This.

I seriously still don’t get it. Use my thumb anytime and all the time.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
