When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
If your answer is "i can't remember...", chances are you better go do it right now. I washed mine today and now their performance has increased twofold. It used to take me about 10 minutes to touch up a vg-10 kitchen knife and now it takes about 5!

Smelly stones??? What are you doing with your stones?
Try a using an eraser instead of soap and water, you’ll remove much more steel dust from your stones.
Was never a space cadet, but with LC200N I might be more in space than a cadet.

I wash them any time there is steel residue visible on them. Night and day difference between dirty stones and fresh stones, especially higher grit ceramics.

Thanks for the tip!

Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
My experience with the Spyderco ceramics is that they need to be cleaned often. I used to clean mine every couple of knives with comet and a scotch brite pad. Usually use other stones these days, just prefer stones that don't load up so fast.
Because desolate places allow us to breathe. And most people don't even know they're out of breath.

I use 0000 steel wool and Comet.
My Sharpmaker stones have never smelled any particular way, though. Not sure how they'd ever be smelly, unless you sharpen a knife blade with fish guts or food residue still on it.

...then spritz them with Febreeze to get rid of the smell.

I've always used the Pentel "Hi-Polymer" erasers. A 3-pack of them is $1.46 from Walmart. Works great. I keep a piece of one along with a double stuff in my pocket.
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
I warshed mine last night before giving the Stretch 2 a little attention. ZDP likes clean stones.
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
I clean mine with an eraser after each use.
I also bought Bar Keeper's Friend just in case I ever get lazy and let them get dirty ^^.
It's how to clean venev stone properly without lapping them that I'd like to find a method for !

Wouldn't steel wool add swarf instead of removing it? Scotchbrite pad and Barkeeper's Friend for me.
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
I clean the stones as I sharpen if need be and always do the final few passes on clean stones.

404 s in 81 steel flavors.
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
Erasers take too much effort for me - green scotch Brite and comet/bar keepers friend gets them nice and clean
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
Bar Keeper’s Friend on a Scotchbrite-backed yellow sponge works for me. Never noticed a smell on my ceramic stones.
Re: When was the last time you washed your smelly sharpmaker stones
I wash mine regularly, mostly because I use the corners the most and they have less surface area and clog faster than the flats.
