Anyone know what I found?
Longtime reader first time posting.
I picked this up at a random garage sale for $8. I am not interested in selling it but I am drawing a blank searching the forum and the web for any real information on it. I found one expired eBay listing calling it a “RARE Vintage Spyderco/Masahiro Sushi Chef's BIG Gyuto Chef”.
Anyone know what I found? It needs a good sharpening and some cleanup but all in all seems to be in stellar shape except the box. Blade is a little over 12” and back side says “Seki-City Japan”.
Thank you all in advance for any insights.

Re: Anyone know what I found?
I'm not familiar with it. The lack of the trademark round hole in the blade make me think it's not legit (almost all have it with rare exception). But I couldn't say for sure. If it is a real Spyderco it's rare and old enough Ive never heard of it.

The handle soes look like the one you would find on a French chef knife.
In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Great find, great price!

That’s a really great find, cmbutler, congrats! Welcome to posting on the forum.
Spydiewiki would be the first place I look for any information regarding this model. Rangefinder is on the right track and appears to have identified it.

Spyderco has done a handful of kitchen knives with no Spydiehole. Normally that would be a dead giveaway but it’s a little more difficult to tell with their older kitchen knives. The Spyderco Filet knife I have does not have a Spydiehole, for example.

Hi Cmbutler,
Nice find. I was so impressed with Masahiro as a manufacturer and with the MBS-26 proprietary blade steel that I did a run of their large Cooks knife. Didn't make too many, maybe 300. They sold for $300 each decades ago.
We haven't been putting out trademark Round Hole in kitchen knives.

Thank you all very much. Pretty sweet to find out it was such a limited production knife. It is a monster, can’t wait to get it cleaned up and worked over on the sharpmaker.

Wow! Talk about a rare one. Very nice
Re: Anyone know what I found?
Now that sal mentions it and I look closer, I guess most of them don't have the round hole. I have the VG-10 Chef's Knife and a bunch of Z-cuts in my kitchen, turns out they are one of the few kitchen knives that do have the hole.
Sorry for steering you wrong, thankfully the others were on top of it

Any interest in a trade for a sugar cane peeling knife?
