What steels do you have the most of?

Post by RevMike »

Just wondering what your top 5 steels are... not by favorites but by quantity of knives you own in those steels.

Mine are:
1. VG-10
2. S30V
3. H1
4. BD1N
5. Hap40

Let me know what you have.

Off the top of my head, K390, followed by VG-10, then probably S30V.

At this present time I have far more VG-10 Spyderco models than I do any other blade steels. I've found VG-10 to be a very dependable and reliable blade steel for most of the hard use blade.

At this time and after all the Spyderco blade steels I've used over the years my overall favorite is probably the Bohler-Uddeholm M390. I EDCed an M390 Military model for well over 4 years and I've found M390 to be super dependable and really sharpens up nicely. It's a great steel for your primary EDC model IMO.

However I doubt if I ever get rid of any of my older Spyderco blades with VG-10 no matter what they produce in the future. VG-10 is so dependable and works so well on such a wide variety of their great blades. Even with all the newer/better blade steels that Spyderco has come out with>> I still like all my VG-10 blades and plan on keeping most of them.

Tied with pairs of each

H1 by far. I think I have around 10 knives with that steel.

Otherwise the only other Spydercos I own are VG10, S30V, and ZDP189.

Without actually counting, I'm thinking H1, ATS-34, S30V, LC200N. I may check back in with an actual count.

Victorinox steel - probably got 10 at least
S30v 3-4 knives
H1 6 knives I think
Buck 420hc at least 4
V10 I think only 3 now?

I have been downsizing quite a bit. I do believe other steels I have are 2 or less of each

If I recall correctly,
Four REX45
Three K390

Perhaps there are other steels in greater quantities, but whatever they are, they're not noteworthy.

If I get a steel and it intrigues me, I try to get it in at least another model. For example, I have a ZDP189 Stretch2 and should receive a ZDP189 Endura4 next week.

If I have the steel in more than two different models, I’m likely to seek it in other models. Once the steel is proven, models (≠variants) rule the day.

My top 5 steels:

17 VG10
17 S30V
7 H1
5 K390
5 S90V
5 M4
5 LC200N
4 M390/204P/20CV
3 Cruwear
3 XHP

VG10 is also my most common steel and I have always considered it a reasonably hard use steel. I was amazed to see the quite low toughness rating in Larrin's charts and thought something must be amiss. I found that looking at the hardness of the VG10 he tested - 61.5 HRC. Spyderco folders seem to sit around 58 HRC so Larrin's rating is not really relevant to our Spyderco folders. I feel like the VG10 in an Endura is tougher than Larrin's rating and has lower edge holding. I think the message is: don't dismiss the toughness of VG10 in a general use folder. It's not CruWear but it's not bad and I have found it significantly better than S30V in harder use.

If you’re ok without corrosion resistance I’d highly recommend giving k390 a try. Supply chain issues aside there’s lot of good production options

I've got 57 Spydercos in 21 different steels.

1. H1 x6

2. S30V x5 (would have been #1 with x7 but I gave 2 away)

3. Is a 6 way tie between K390, 4V, HAP40, M4, BD1N, and VG-10 with x4 of each.

4. Is a tie between S90V and Rex45 with x3 each.

5. Is a 4 way tie between Maxamet, ZDP-189, Superblue, and LC200N with x2 each.
