Custom Shop?

#1

Post by resonanzmacher »

I’m sure this question has been asked in the past, but searched a bit and didn’t see it, so I’ll just ask: What are the odds we’ll ever see Spyderco offering ‘build-your-own’ or other forms of in house customization options the way some other American knifemakers do for certain of their models?

I’d be quite interested in it, I can tell you that much ;)

I’m surprised that you searched for this topic and found nothing! This is brought up a couple times a year at least, there are many threads discussing it.

Odds of a Spyderco custom shop happening are very low. (At least, that always seems to be consensus from these threads.)

From what I’ve heard, Spyderco has been looking to expand their Golden facility. If a Spyderco custom shop were to ever happen, I think it would be a very careful decision after that supposed expansion.

I bet it comes up at least once a year.

If I could just get Spyderco factory ground serrations, I would be ecstatic. I just can't bring myself to trust anyone else to do it right. I can understand Spyderco not taking the risk to make every knife in a SE variant, but if they could offer a service cutting serrations in any knife I send them, they'd make just as much money off me that way as they do from knife purchases. I would probably give them enough business to justify the service all by myself lol.

Just typing "custom shop" in advanced search and limiting it to thread titles yields results, the most recent one from April this year.

Hey, there's that rabbit hole of past discussion I was looking for! I figured it had to be there, looks like if I'd looked a little harder I'd have found it myself.

At least I'm not the only one who'd want such a thing. The truth is I'm fine without it but I'm more thinking of people who aren't comfortable voiding their own warranties but still would like to get in on a little individualization of their daily carry.

oh man... one of them was me. 😂

i still think it would be great if we could get custom combinations of pieces already regularly available. like a black blade pacific salt with yellow handles... or a spy27 manix with g10... there's nothing custom about that except the construction. all the pieces are already there.

Man that was some good info. Y’all got into it.

How’s this scenario sound: Spyderco brings back or introduces a model for a Spyderworks release. Say, the Worker, or the Kiwi, or the Warrior, or whatever they feel like bringing back. They do this first Spyderworks release much like a Kickstarter complete with preordering and stretch goals reflecting economies of scale, plan their run, offer whatever is left over from covering preorders for sale at SFO, and then take stock and see how that worked. If there’s a good response then iterate and try it again.

I’d also be down for trying it through a ‘related’ enterprise, like having 5x5 have a Yojimbo configurator.

As long as people keep buying up every single sprint and dealer exclusive of the same three knives in new colors, and Spyderco continues to be operating at max capacity, there isn't much incentive to add a custom shop. They're already selling as many knives as they can produce.

Now, if sales start to slow or the upcoming expansion adds capacity that isn't being fully utilized, then they might see some incentive to branch out. But for now, they seem to be happy to let the aftermarket fill the customization void.
