Z-Cut breakage
Hi all, I was using my Z-Cut to slice some cheese, and out popped the blade, neat as you please.
I'm wondering if this is the sort of thing that would be covered under the Warranty? Has anyone else had anything similar happen? I wasn't torqueing particularly hard.
I welcome any input! Thanks guys

Re: Z-Cut breakage
Seems like a warranty issue to me. We use mine for everything, cheese included but maybe not as hard as whatever you cut.

Re: Z-Cut breakage
Cheese’ll do it lol.
Where is the break? I assume if it’s mechanical failure and not something like the glue or molding coming loose over time it’d be covered. Also have you ran it through the dishwasher before? That tends to loosen handles and create pockets of inaccessible rust.

No dishwasher; I hand-wash all of my kitchen knives. There does appear to be some corrosion on the tang, however.Abyss_Fish wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:11 amCheese’ll do it lol.

I'd say that's a warranty issue.

There was another the broke a while back as well. Pretty sure Sal said to send it in.

Re: Z-Cut breakage
Is there more tang broken off in the handle or is that knife just have a short tang like that?

Re: Z-Cut breakage
Thank you for raising that question; at first I had assumed that what popped out was the entirety of the tang, but after reading your post I took a flashlight to the inside of the handle, and sure enough, there's still tang left in there! So the tang snapped pretty cleanly in two. Also, I was under the impression that BD1N was a very corrosion-resistant alloy; I wonder how common it is to find rust on it?Spydergirl88 wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:31 amIs there more tang broken off in the handle or is that knife just have a short tang like that?

Re: Z-Cut breakage
I would also add that according to the packaging the Z-cuts are dishwasher safe.
I don't own a dish washer so can't confirm. But no issues with the 3 I have or the dozen Ive gifted.

Ooh, nice. It was actually a misfired pun - “hard cheese” is another way of saying “bad luck” here, which seemed doubly appropriate.

Surprised to see that. I've used mine pretty hard and its been good to me.
Out of curiosity how big was the block of cheese?

Re: Z-Cut breakage
These are my mother's Z-Cuts.. I got her the PE for Christmas 2019 and the SE, I think, for Mother's Day 2020. These pictures were taken in Dec 2020 when she asked me to "bring home that triangle-y sharpening thing" and touch up the edges for her.. needless to say, I was pretty surprised by the rust spots!JonLeBlanc wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:38 amThank you for raising that question; at first I had assumed that what popped out was the entirety of the tang, but after reading your post I took a flashlight to the inside of the handle, and sure enough, there's still tang left in there! She tells me she "loves!" them, uses them "everyday for pretty much everything!" in the kitchen, and claims to only hand wash them.. "I've never put them in the dishwasher..idk about your father though.." she said when I made a surprised comment about the corrosion on them. She did admit to "sometimes letting them air-dry in the dish rack." My personal Z-Cut has zero corrosion. I hand wash it after use and then immediately towel it dry.. but I also use it A LOT less than my mom uses her's..
Mom doesn't seem bothered by the rust spots on her "favorite knives" and actually seemed amused when I kept wondering aloud at how deep the corrosion might go into the handle. My musings on the supposed corrosion-resistant properties of CTS BD1N steel only earned me a raised eyebrow.. "I don't care about that little rust spot," she said, "they cut better than all my other knives!" Hahah, I guess it just goes to show, if you want to see how a knife will really hold up, let a "non-knife" person use it! :p

Obviously a warranty issue, but I would just epoxy that back in.

Re: Z-Cut breakage
I use my Z-Cuts every single day, literally. I never take special care of them. I wash them by hand and let them air dry. I have no rust whatsoever, and so far no issues with breaking...and I would think if they were going to break they would have, given as much use as they get.
