Para 3 strange vertical streaks in blade

#1

Post by Jacare »

Hi, I bought a new Para 3 and the blade have some machining marks along the blade that none of the others has...it's like some vertical streaks along the blade. Can someone help me to understand if it is a defect? Thank you!

Are you talking about the grind lines?

Different steel discolorations correspond to different temperatures.

The blade shape seems off too, too stubby, unless it's the camera angle.

Exactly. I have other Para3 in the same type of steel and none of the blades have these lines...if you notice the blade finish is not all the same. All the others I have, the finish is all the same before and after the part where the cut of the blade begins.

You can easily feel these lines with your nail, they are quite pronounced.

The newer s30v blades have these grind lines. Mine has the same lines. It’s nothing to worry about.

I'm sorry to have to disagree with you but I have 5 more Para3 on S30v and none of them have this finish on the blade. These vertical lines / streaks are so prominent that you can feel perfectly with the nail. I wonder if anyone had any with this characteristic?

Looks like some really beautiful machining or grind lines. I love that look! I'm really not a fan of any other type of blade other than satin. I don't like stonewashed, blasted, or distressed blades.

I kinda like it. Are these blades ground with belts or stones? Perhaps indicates a grinding tool nearing the end of service life.

I’d say quit looking at them and use the knife and forget about it.

I agree with the others, it's nothing to worry about. Not sure what you want people to tell you. If you're unhappy with it, send it back to the dealer you bought it from

I can see the same lines in my Spy27. Maybe they aren’t as prominent, but definitely are there. I view them as signs of a nice evenly ground profile. Almost works of art on some models.

I've seen this on a few of my Spyderco knives. I never gave it a thought.

It's not that strange or unusual. ;)

I have to agree with the others, these are grind lines and nothing to worry about. Now if the appearance is unacceptable to you (and that is entirely subjective) exchanging or returning for refund would be justified.

For me I even like to see this finish on the blade, I just found it strange because none of the others in the same steel has these lines.

Nothing like taking the doubts we have with those who share the same product and have experience. So thank you all for your help !!!

It’s fine, grind lines. If you’re a collector, and you don’t like them, send it back. If you’re a user, start using it.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Similar on my Maxamet PM2. I was wondering if it was some sort of carbide tearout from the finishing belts but ended up going out of town for a bit and forgetting about it until now.

They have depth, but not something I could measure. Microscopic.

To be honest I like this finish in the blade...it's diferent. As none of the others has this finish, I was worried that it might be a defect, so nothing like sharing with you and knowing your opinions. I am more relaxed in keeping it in my collection! Thank you all for your help!
