My scope finally came in today.
A Steiner T6xi 2.5-15x50 (34mm)
Made in the 🇺🇸 but, using Schott glass from 🇩🇪
I've never looked thru glass as nice as this.
Really excited to get it mounted tomorrow
It'll be going on that SOLGW M4 76 13.7"
Image
That's a nice scope... you get ruined real quick comparing high end glass to the mid grade stuff.

How'd it shoot? I scooped up a used Viper PST in a Larue mount that I haven't even got to shoot yet...

Not sure yet. I was able to get it zeroed at 50 yards Saturday. I just didn't have enough time to do more.
But, tomorrow I'm gonna see what she will do from 100 yards. I wanna see what she'll do with 55gr 62gr and 77gr smkgmm
I may be in for a rude awakening- then again, she might shoot as good as .50 moa
I'm thinking I'm gonna be doin great to get 1 moa
But, ya never know. SAS was able to get .51" at 100 yards with the factory trigger.
Does that sound reasonable?
I'm more used to shooting a bolt gun for groups.and with a higher magnification scope
But, this thing is so crystal clear, I may be able to do pretty good. I'll know pretty quick whether she shoots tight or not. I hope she does.

So, I wanted to go back again & fine tune my zero at 50 yards (I'll do 100 hard test shots tomorrow)
At any rate, I'm not too terribly happy with the results. But, then again, I've never really shot for groups with an M4. It's always been a bolt rifle with a nice scope that I always shot for groups for. Maybe this is acceptable for a "battle rifle" for lack of a better term.
The first couple groups were at 57 yards - the rest were at 50 yards. I had just measured wrong the first couple groups I shot.
At any rate, today I shot PMC X-TAC 62gr Green Tip, Magtech 77 gr OTM & Federal 55 gr Soft Point - and it's old ammo from the very early 80's - maybe late 70's if not mistaken.
Lemme knkw what ya think if this is acceptable or not.

Lol, man those groups make me say, that usually, I can do my part. This is with a 45 auto, 8 rounds 230gr ball ammo at 21 feet.
So, I can shoot, a little bit anyways.

So, if I measured my groups correctly, I think this gun will at best be a 1 moa rifle
My best group was 0.73" so, 0.738 - 0.223 = .51"
Note, moa at 50 yards is .50"
And this was with the old Federal 55gr soft point!
The best group with the Magtech 78gr otm was .98" & the best group with the 62gr Green Tip was - well, actually both groups were 1.28"
So, at best a 1 moa rifle and no worse than just a hair over 2 moa. I think...
Edit, tomorrow I'll shoot some Federal 77gr SMKFGMM just to see what it does.

Well, I took my other rifle out today to shoot it.
Also wanted to try some Federal Gold Medal Match Ammo (77 grains)
Man, this stuff shoots good.
It's just lie everyone says, in an M4 or AR15, ammo makes a huge difference- yall will have to look over me as I don't have much experience shooting M4's or AR15's.
It's fun though!! - bear in mind, this is just from 50 yards
Ant any rate, the first 7 shots are getting my scope dialed in to the rifle and ammo. Actually, the first 3 and last 3 shots were really nice.
Had to make 2 adjustments

Thanks, Mac!
*edit* I reckon what I'm trying to get at, is that it's normal to be above 1 moa on most .556/.223 ammo, in a milspec barrel? And especially so in a short milspec barrel?
From what I've read most shoot between 1 & 4 moa, with most between 2-4 moa?
If so, that's fine. It is what it is. If I want precision or close too it, I'll just need to use that Federal Gold Medal Match or similar.

Well, if anything fellas, I'm a firm believer in high end glass. Now, I'm not at all saying there's anything wrong with mid grade glass, or even low end. I've had both. Actually, I never thought I would ever leave the mid grade scope range. The 1st Gen Vortex Viper PST I had was an absolute tank and had very nice glass. A scope to be proud of for sure. But, it's just like JestersHK said, the high end glass will ruin ya. Ha, it's almost exactly like going from a good factory trigger to a custom trigger with absolute zero creep and a lighter pull...you find you just can't go back. Lol, like going from halogen Headlights to LED's
Expensive yes. But so worth it too!!

You youngsters enjoy good eyesight while you can.
Between the progressive pterygium from the left
and cataract from the right in my aiming eyeball
an expensive scope would be wasted on me.

My ophthalmologist referred me to a specialist.
He must be a good one.
I could not get an appointment until October 30.

Mac, I wish ya well buddy. I really hope you get what ya need for your eyesight.
And, that's exactly why I went ahead and got a high end scope. I'll be 52 this November...

I will! Thank you, Dan.
Ya know, I shouldn't expect too much from a 13.7" milspec barrel. But, it's really wild how different a semi automatic is compared to a bolt rifle when shooting for accuracy/groups. Especially the difference in ammo.
But, to be honest, I'm more happy with this scope than anything lol. I'll be getting another one in 5-30x56. Best thing about it, is I can always put the nice scope on whatever rifle I want.

I think your groups are decent. AR barrels are always a journey to find what they like the best. I've had a $150 bargain barrel group better than a $300 mid grade barrel. As you said though they're not precision bolt guns. I'm not sure what blanks SOLGW uses either. Also put a few more rounds down range and see if things tighten up once it gets some fouling in there.

That's good to hear!
Ya know, one fella said, that sometimes it's just the luck of the draw when it comes to barrels. That most shoot decent but some are just very good.
I think he meant across the board kinda thing.
I'll keep on it man. A good scope makes everything so much more fun imo.
Oh, and SOLGW has Balistic Advantage make the barrels to their specs.
The thought crossed my mind to rebarrel with either a Bartlein or Lothar Walther but, why?
It would just run that incredible warranty they have. As long as it doesn't print crazy bad I'm just gonna leave it alone. And you telling me those groups are decent just closed the matter actually.
I am gonna keep shooting it.

I picked up an almost brand new P30SK for $490. Didn't really need it but I typically buy pretty much any HK deal under $500...

Also Palmetto State Armory finally got me with their cheap AR10 platform. Again another gun and caliber I didn't really need but at least a scope found a home. Curious to see how it shoots. A buddy has one and said I might be surprised by a $600 AR10. We'll see I guess.

That's a killer deal!
