I recently was lucky enought to get my hand on a sprint run spyderco,is it considered foulish to use it for edc or should it be kept new in its box?

I guess that depends on the reason for buying the knife, I buy my knives to use them (sprint or otherwise) and i don't feel foolish.
I've seen lots of pictures of sprints in use on This forum.
Although Some buy to collect, and keep their knives in imaculate condition.
Resale value is bound to be higher on New in box, but if you are not going to sell it, why not use it.. :)

Hey Reggy welcome to the forum. :)

Sprint runs in all sorts of you beauty steels can be a lot of fun to play with. I use the knives I buy and the more I like the knife the more I want to use it without flogging it unnecessarily or doing Rambo stuff but I like trying and sharpening new steels. So I’d say use and enjoy your knife for it’s intended purpose and I’m sure you’ll find if you keep it clean along with a little maintenance and good sharpening protocol your knife will last a very long time. :cool:

I guess it depends on which sprint run but I'd say go ahead and use it.

Can't appreciate a sprint steel unless you use it enough to compare to the steels you know.

I do have a few duplicates in their boxes and I keep them in a safety deposit box in case of robbery or fire. Something to start over with.

If you plan on reselling it you will get more unused, but not much. I'd say use it and don't abuse it. I carry and use all of my Sprint Runs. That is what they were made for. I do baby one of them, though, because it is too pretty. That is the Nishijin Dragonfly. The rest get used well.

If I like or want a particular Spyderco knife really bad, I buy two of them.
One for a "safe queen" and one for a "user". My latest "illness" is a Smock.

3 reasons to use it.

1) life is too short.

2) The way I see it is why keep something nice for somebody else.

3) Once you get to 5-10 knives you battle to wear any of them out.

As others have said, it depends on whether you bought it as an investment or because you liked it. If the former, by all means keep both the knife and the box it came in pristine. If the later, enjoy it.

My sprint run HAP 40 Endura and my very recently acquired sprint run HAP 40 Stretch 1 are together with their respective VG10 siblings my most carried knives period. And these are the only two sprint run models I own...

I personally am not interested in buying a sprint run just cause it´s a sprint run or solely for investment (though both is totally fine, don´t get me wrong), but just if I really love the particular run MORE than the "regular" version (which is the case with burnt orange / HAP 40 vs black / VG10).
And if I love a knife I really can´t do other but having it with me as often as possible.

Sure, if I had more money, I´d probably always buy TWO of my favorite models and keep one as a backup in the drawer, should I loose the one I carry.

Right, what´s the quote again exactly? Something like "you only get so and so much percent of what we put in the knife if you don´t use it" ?

I go with use it as well. As someone else said, once you acquire a handful or more of knives...it's tough to really beat up on one in particular. As long as you're using it for normal cutting tasks, it should be just fine. Obviously if it's not a stainless steel and you don't want a patina, then you'd have to be a little more careful with what you're cutting into.

Never understood why someone would pay a good chunk of money on a sprint run...just to stare at it in a case or box, or just to flip open a few times here or there. Knives certainly aren't some kind of cash cow investment you can turn a major profit on. Maybe a couple hundred dollars on a few very limited models. Other than that you're profiting $100 or less if you're flipping it.

Similar to going to car shows and seeing some beautifully restored car that has never been driven on the street. Such a waste!
