Is there any difference between Translucent and Solid FRCP?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Is there any material difference between translucent and solid colored FRCP? Is one stronger than the other? I wonder because of the dye that makes it solid colored. Why would another dye make it translucent?

The original Manix 2 Lightweight was debuted in completely clear FRCP. I do seem to recall something about it being either brittle or discoloring, can't remember.

I think the completely clear FRCP was nixed because when the skeletonized handles picked up pocket lint, it looked pretty gross and dirty.

A few years ago I remember seeing a couple of the translucent blue models that were broken around the pivot and some other place. I have no way of knowing how they were broken. But, it made me wonder. I was thinking of a new knife and the translucent is pretty cool...but so is the black/black...and then there is that orange one. It seems that there must be some sort of difference in the make up, but perhaps not.

Same material, just different colors and amounts of pigment.

Was there any definitive reason for not going with clear? It looked so cool in the Amsterdam pics.

I'd love to see more translucent, or even clear. The "smoke gray" has come up a few times and sounds awesome.

It does look cool. So glad they ditched the pinned pivot.

Thanks Michael! That is just what I needed to know.

ED, that clear does look pretty cool. I somehow missed that one. I wonder why it was never produced? Now THAT with an XHP blade would make a great forum knife. It would be very different from anything done before by anybody.
