Spyderco Fish Hunter photo thread (some graphic content)

#1

Post by Surfingringo »

I got my Fish Hunter about a week ago and mounted it on the kayak and I have really been enjoying it. This is a really cool design and I think maybe it deserves its own photo thread. I will be posting some fishing pics but honestly I'd like to hear from everyone who has one of these and see what different folks are using theirs for. I know not everyone who owns one of these will be poking big fish in the head with it but I bet this design ends up getting used plenty for "other activities" and I'm interested to see how folks are using theirs. Of course, if you are poking big fish in the head with it then by all means post those pics too!

I have used mine for all my normal kayak fishing chores but haven't had any real need to use it for its primary purpose...until today. Got a nice Cubera Snapper this morning that I brain shivved to stop the flop. These are very heavy boned fish with bony heads but most every fish has a "slot" that you can slide a thin blade through to get to the sweet spot. No damage at all to the fine tip. I'd give the design an A+ so far.

Ok, lets get some pics going in here. Post up whatever you're using your Fish Hunter for, whether its braining fish or peeling papayas! :D

Great catch--great kill!!!

I think this illustrates why for the size of fish I dive for, I prefer a knife with a minimal sized blade for braining. Its a small added safety factor, for situations when the fish goes crazy out of control in close quarters.

Had a legitimate need for the fish hunter today. Landed a big Grouper and he kept flopping in my small kayak. There isn't much space in there and I was afraid he was going to break my rods or possibly damage my pedal drive and leave me way out in the ocean without a drive. I tried to slide the fish hunter into a soft spot but couldn't find one on that bony grouper head. Finally I changed my grip to hold it like an icepick and just slammed it in with force. Missed the brain on the first two shots but nailed it with the third and after a few twitches it was lights out. The tip of the fish hunter suffered no damage ever after being slammed through that bony head and is still ice-pick sharp.

Didn't need the Fish Hunter for these, but you could see thru them after filleting with my Sprig. No after pics because it started pouring rain on the last flounder. Had to go inside to skin these as the lightning got bad. With crab stuffing, mmmm good. :spyder:
