C36 MILITARY with STRIPED BLADE

I wonder if anybody has information about this knife:

I recently found it online. The blade is CPM-S30V, the handle black G-10. It is inscribed GOLDEN, COLORADO U.S.A. EARTH. The black stripes appear identical to a similar all-black CPM-S30V Military I have. The lighter stripes are gray in color and have a matte finish. I don't know how these black blades are made. This looks almost like the whole blade is covered in this gray matte finish and the black is laid down over that, except that here it is striped rather than covering the whole blade. I am assuming this was done at the factory and is not an after market mod but am not sure. Any comments?

The seller had a notation that this once belonged to Sal Glesser. I don't know if that is apocryphal or truth. Perhaps Sal will comment.

Thanks for any commentary or help you can provide.

I've honestly never seen one like that before, Jan, but I like it. Maybe it was a test-run prototype of some sort. As you mentioned, maybe Sal will chime in with some info. Cool knife!

I highly doubt that came from the factory like that. Looks like someone bead/glass blasted a stock DLC military.

Hard to be sure from those photos, but I see at least one Phillips head screw where there should be a Torx. I'd say either a mod job or an outright fake.

Hi all, Jan and I were chatting about this knife and I recommended he start this thread to seek advice from the forum, or better yet Sal himself. I hope you don't mind Jan, but here's some better pics that Jan sent me by email.

I've had about 20 Millies in my collection (a few less now ;)), and this one looks pretty legit to me. All Torx BTW... Cool as **** (whomever made it)! Cheers, Radioactive :)

To me it looks like the lines were done with a sandblaster.

I'm thinking it was sand blasted as well they just masked off the sections they wanted to keep black.

I re-read the original blurb about this knife. Here it is: "This knife came directly from Sal Glesser, owner of Spyderco, at the Oregon Knife Collectors Show. 1 of a Kind."

Could still be a post-factory mod I guess. If I sent this to Spyderco will they comment?

Yes, I believe they would respond to you. Or, you could just e-mail them a picture too.

Looks like a mod but a pretty cool one, hadn't thought about that..
(always loved that Strider bead blast finish but have issues actually cutting stuff with those blades ;) )

I'd say that, unless the person who wrote that blurb is someone you know and trust implicitly, Sal is the only one who can confirm or deny its accuracy and the knife's authenticity.

I sent an email to Spyderco asking how I could authenticate the Sal story and how the knife was made. Scott replied quickly saying they would run it by Sal. I sent a pic also. I will post any response I receive.

It's an actual Spyderco but the mod was done afterwards by someone that wanted to see what it would look like.
