I believe the Vesuvius was the first compression lock. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are not wrong, the Vesuvius was first, even though it was not problem-free.

True that.
I fell in love with the looks of the Vesuvius and so bought two.
One turned into a carry knife and one became a user.

Before the one could become a user, I had to solve a problem with one of the rear spacers that came into contact with the belly of the blade when the knife was closed! I used a Dremel to grind a U-shape in the spacer to give the blade the needed couple of millimeters of space. Of course, that spacer, when installed, has to be rotated to a specific angle so that the U is aligned with the blade correctly. Other than that it's a great knife; though it's a mystery to me how one of my specimens could have that problem and the other not have it.

I love the fact that the closure force is accomplished with a milled tang instead of a ball bearing detent. I've been seeing too many issues written about regarding ball bearing detents.

Of those two, the Paramilitary came out before the "S". The latter was more or less a second generation Salsa, which also had the compression lock.

I think the compression lock is a great lock. I've enjoyed every knife I've had with a compression lock.
