Ice handles?
hey guys, on one of those "make a spydie" models, would it be possible to make a mould for, and then freeze a....
ICE HANDLE! it would be a pretty cool idea, and it would be more of a silly gag.
how could you do this, (i know its not practical) but we should carve out something, and be like "oh look at the 2010 forum knife son!"
i was thinking... we use a mule, make a mould, add some glow powder, and pour our water and freeze, then we etch out, and paint the inside letters of "spyderco forums 2010"

You must be an Andy Goldsworthy fan. I am too.
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

If you wanted to have a better shot at this, I would recommend using a pykrete mixture (water mixed with sawdust, then frozen => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pykrete ). It's much stronger than pure ice, and it takes a lot longer to melt, so you have a better chance of getting the scales done and attached before they turn soggy. Either that, or do this work outside, during winter, someplace where it snows.
Good idea Nifty,Nifty_Nives wrote:hey guys, on one of those "make a spydie" models, would it be possible to make a mould for, and then freeze a....

Bondo, liquid and cloth polyester, forms a good handle for a knife. Your creativity can run wild. Wrap, soak and repeat. Sand to your satisfaction.
This terrific knife, made by the talented, gifted and generous yam350 in about 4 hours (includes blade cutting and finishing), is made from polyester cloth and resin:

I have always wanted a set of plexiglass scales for my mule. What better way to show off the the form of a mule than water clear scales? Water clear epoxy would (pun intended) seal the deal.
Plexiglass is a bitach to work with. It starts to melt with almost any machining. I've done a little bit of freehand work with plexiglass and it wants to melt when it is drilled or sanded. Plexiglass may not be a good working handle but it would be so cool to show off. How about some well checkered plexiglass scales?
Mules are should be working test knives but I want one to show off.
This post was not meant as a hijack but is so silly as to open itself to a variety of ideas.

Not really all that slick
Of course you want clear scales and you deserve to have them as well.
There is a long rich history of clear scales on salesman sample cutlery. Some collect it.
I have your ice scales right here, crystal clear are cut small by vendor, flourescent blue clear is still in the 12" square, 1/4" thick, sheet.

I've seen ice this color while inside the, now long gone, huge and extensive ice caves on Paradise Glacier on Mt. Rainier (I put a light on the far end of the clear flourescent blue sheet and the color transferred to the small clear scales):
The protective brown paper stays on until the scales are finished or destroyed trying to finish.
