Spyderco C09 CoPilot Varieties

#1

Post by The CoPilot »

As I've been promising for some time now, I've decided to start a thread outlining the different varieties of the Spyderco Model C09 CoPilot (both production varieties and after-market embellished versions). This thread will be a work in progress and I intend to edit and update it as new information becomes available. If you happen to have a C09 CoPilot variety that you don't see listed here, please contact me by PM or email with information about your knife and photos so that I can get it added to the list. This thread has been a labor or love and it would not have been possible without the help of the Spyderco Forum community, many of whom helped send different C09 CoPilot varieties my way. Thank you, all!

So without further adieu, let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start :D ):

Designation: C09-01 CoPilot (with brass liners)
Spyderco Model No.: 1009 PLN CoPilot; 1009S CoPilot
Varieties: plain edge, right-handed; plain edge, left-handed; Spyder edge, right-handed; Spyder edge, left-handed
Description: Regular production model; first run
Handle scales: Stainless steel with brass liners
Blade Steel: G-2 (a.k.a. Gingami-1); steel type not marked on blade
Blade Markings: SPYDERCO / SEKI-JAPAN
Blade edges offered: Plain Edge, Spyder Edge
Producer: G. Sakai (Seki City, Japan) for Spyderco
Original box: Red cardboard with white labels on plain edge models and yellow labels on serrated models

Comments: Brass liners used on early C09 CoPilots. It was initially thought that the brass liners would add a degree of aesthetic appeal (which it did) and make the action of the knife smoother (which it did not). All brass-lined Co-Pilots have a one piece backspacer and lock spring (commonly referred to as an “integral lockspring” ;) . To reduce production costs, later varieties of the CoPilot featured a separate backspacer and lock spring. Brass-lined CoPilots are also available with both long (65mm) and short clips (58mm). The first knives featured a longer clip with an upturned end. After complaints of these early clips catching on things, Spyderco modified the clips to have flattened ends. Still later, the flattened end clips were reduced in length. Produced in both right-handed and left handed versions. Approximately 20% of the knives produced were left-handed.

Designation: C09-02 CoPilot (with brass liners)
Spyderco Model No.: 1009 CoPilot (plain edge); 1009S CoPilot (Spyder edge)
Varieties: plain edge, right-handed; Spyder edge, right-handed
Description: Regular production model; second run (circa 1993-1995?)
Handle scales: Stainless steel with brass liners
Blade Steel: G-2 (a.k.a. Gingami-1); steel type marked on blade
Blade Markings: SPYDERCO G-2 STAINLESS / SEKI-CITY JAPAN
Producer: G. Sakai (Seki City, Japan) for Spyderco
Blade edges offered: Plain Edge, Spyder Edge
Original box: Red cardboard

Comments: Although it was initially thought that only a single run on brass-lined CoPilots had been made, this variety first surfaced in August 2008 revealing that a second run of brass-lined CoPilot in both plain and Spyder edge had been made after Spyderco started putting the "G-2 Stainless" steel markings on their blades in 1992. At this point in time, it is not known how many pieces were in the second run. All were right-handed (no left-handed brass-lined G-2 maked CoPilots were made.

Designation: C09-03 CoPilot
Spyderco Model No.: C09 CoPilot; C09S CoPilot
Varieties: plain edge (integral lockspring); Spyder edge (integral lockspring); plain edge (separate lockspring); Spyder edge (separate lockspring)
Description: Regular production model
Handle scales: Stainless steel (thicker profile)
Blade Steel: G-2 (a.k.a. Gingami-1); steel type marked on blade
Blade Markings: SPYDERCO G-2 STAINLESS / SEKI-CITY JAPAN
Producer: G. Sakai (Seki City, Japan) for Spyderco
Blade edges offered: Plain Edge, Spyder Edge
Original box: Red cardboard with white labels on plain edge models and
yellow labels on serrated models

Comments: Spyderco began marking the type of blade steel used on their blades beginning in approximately 1992. The first G-2 marked CoPilots used the same integral backspacer and lock spring that had been used on the brass-lined CoPilots. The brass liners were abandoned in favor of all-stainless handle scales, and the scales on the early G-2 marked knives were fairly thick. A second variation of the G-2 marked knives was created when Spyderco transitioned from the integral lockspring to the separate backspacer and lock spring. The stainless handle scales on the separate lockspring knives are also somewhat thinner than those on the integral lock spring knives.

Designation: C09-05 CoPilot (Tufram®-coated aluminum handles)
Spyderco Model No.: C09SATU CoPilot
Varieties: Spyder edge, G-2 marked blade; Spyder edge, GIN-1 marked blade
Description: Regular production model
Handle scales: Tufram®-coated aluminum
Blade Steel: Gingami-1; steel type marked on blade
Blade Markings: SPYDERCO G-2 STAINLESS / SEKI-CITY JAPAN
SPYDERCO GIN-1 STAINLESS / SEKI-CITY JAPAN
Producer: G. Sakai (Seki City, Japan) for Spyderco
Blade edges offered: Spyder Edge
Original box: Red cardboard with yellow labels

Comments: In 1994, Spyderco experimented with Tufram®-coated aluminum handles on several of their models (C01 Worker, C07 Police, and the C09 Copilot). It was a very durable coating, but proved to be expensive to produce. The Tufram® CoPilot is an interesting model in that it got caught up in the blade-marking transition from "G-2 Stainless" to "GIN-1 Stainless". Although the physical composition on steels in identical (Gingami-1 stainless steel, made by Hitachi), prior to 1994-1995, Spyderco was unable to use the "Ginagmi-1" designation because the steel manufacturer had an exclusive agreement with another knife maker for use of the GIN-1 marking. Hitachi did, however, allow Spyderco to use this steel, provided that it was marked differently. Sal Glesser with Spyderco chose the designation of "G-2", which he claims stood for "Good sh*t, too". The C09SASU Tufram® CoPilot was first introduced in 1994, but production appears to have spanned into 1995 when the first "GIN-1" marked blades began to appear. Also note that the "G-2 Stainless" marked knives feature a pocket clip with stamped patent information, while the "GIN-1 Stainless" variety has an unmarked clip.

I've got all of the regular production varieties so far and several (but not all) of the aftermarkets varieties. There are an awful lot of aftermarket varieties and a new one could be created at anytime.
