Customized my Dodo!

#1

Post by heathen »

Hi folks. I have been itching to customize my Dodo since I got it last week.

Here's what I did:

1)Shortened grip to make it more pocketable.

2)Filed off the pointy part of the rearmost finger groove because when I choke up on it with my skinny fingers my pinky would sit right on that little pointy part.

3)I had to move the clip screw forward since it would be lost in the shortening. I tried to put it as close to the middle ofthe handle to eliminate flexing.

4)Lightly fileworked the handle because a little of the clip grooves was still showing, and just for fun.

Here's the link to the photos.

So you're probably thinking man he actually accomplished the impossible. He made an ugly knife even uglier!

How does it feel? For me with my scrawny fingers it feels incredible. And it fits in my pocket very easily. So I am calling it a success.

What's next? Well, I still need to countersink the clip screw, like the pivot screw comes from the factory, for strength and so it won't stick out so far. And I might try and mill in some slots so the wire clip can still be used. So what do you think? Anybody else customize a Dodo? I think this is one design that really lends itself to customization. It was one of my favorites before and is my new favorite now!

Take care, Heath

P.S. I wanted to say thanks to Eric and Sal for such a great design and sorry for butchering it.

Sweet!

I'd love to see something like that offered in FRN or a slim SS handle by <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>co.

Excellent job!

Thanks guys for the compliments. This was very easy to do. The only tools needed were drill and the appropriate drill bit (can't remember size, I know I should've used a drill press but I was impatient and the regular drill worked out just fine), hacksaw, 8" bastard file, dual side sand sponge with coarse and fine grits, triangular needle file and a V shaped needle file for the file work. I think it took me maybe an hour and a half to do the whole thing. I was going kinda slow to avoid screwing it up too bad.

Thanks

Heya...

Why don't you post in this thread: 'Q For Sal: Impoved Dodo?' at,

http://www.spyderco.com/forum/topic.asp ... lse&S=True

OR open a new one.

I don't think Sal might want to change the Dodo too much, the design doing well as it does already, BUT a Dodo-lite lockback in an adapted black FRN handle like yours would be interestingly different enough.

Sweet idea and sweet work heathen!

Good work, Heath. Looks comfortable. If she pleases you with her new user friendly functionality - ugly is just a state of mind.
