Display any model in actual size on your screen

#1

Post by Ted »

It's in a beta stage, but give it a try.

First, click <A HREF="http://www.ted.tweakdsl.nl/spyderco/actual.html" TARGET=_blank>here</A>

Then, measure the width of that black bar with a ruler, and enter the value in the text-box (in decimal format, so 2.25 instead of 2 1/4)

Then choose your <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> model in the pulldown list and click on the button.

You will then see a new window with that <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> model in actual 1:1 - 100% size.

<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

To see another model, first close the window, select another model and press the button again.

I checked 3 models (C29,C05 & C55) and they're pretty accurate. Maybe +/- 5% or so.

All feedback (also of course if you think a model doesn't appear in the correct size) is very much appreciated.

I also have no clue <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> if this works in browsers like Netscape or on a Macintosh, so let me know if it doesn't.

Ted

Very, very helpful and cool. I tried comparing my Dodo to the screen and it was off by 1/8" but that's still really close and could be because of my innacurate measurement of the black bar (I only have a cheap 6" plastic ruler).

Even though I measured 8" on the bar, I get the most accurate sizes by entering 7.75. Otherwise things are a little undersized. Is it my monitor, or maybe a software calculation glitch?

Did I mention this is very helpful and cool?

The only thing better would be one where you could put two or more models up, but I'll take what I can get.

donutsrule, Most pics are a bit wider then the actual model (to show the shadow, otherwise they look odd).
That explains why entering a smaller measurement will give a more accurate picture. If everybody experiences it this way, I can adjust the calculation.

I'll add an option for two models in a next version.

Thanks Ted,
This is a great tool you have come up with. The bar measures 7 inches, and the lengths come up on the money. Now I can compare all my knives without leaving home. Thanks again for your work here and your other two windows also.

Very cool Ted!

I find that if I set it at 8.5, it's pretty darn close.

Nice work.

I have a macintosh and it worked for me. First I tried my bob lum chinese folder and the sizes were very close. The picture however was a little blurry. I then tried an ATR and the picture was good and clear (I don't have an ATR, therefore I don't know about the accuracy).

Overall, very cool. Thanks.

Ted,

Another AWESOME job!

I found 5.48 worked for giving me the 1:1 ratio. The monitor that I used was set at a resolution of 1152X864.

I compared a Dodo, Native & Calypso Jr.

I agree, awesome! I pulled things out and held them up to the screen for comparison. This is a useful comparative tool. 17" CRT monitor at 1024x768 netted me 6" on the reference bar.

This is excellent...I suspect it was a labour of love, but Spyderco should pay you anyway, and use it on the site.

It's also fun to "grow" or "shrink" certain models, by adjusting the measurement, to make a "fantasy Spyderco"...Anyone for a super-Cricket? How about a "mini-Spyderfly"?

my thanx

I get 5.4725" on my screen for getting close to right on... but it's fun to see supersized small ones
