Do you carry the Ronin for EDC?

#1

Post by KBR »

Today, I got the urge to try out a fixed blade for EDC. The problem is....I don't have one. Sooooo, within the next couple of weeks, I plan on ordering a Ronin and using it for my EDC.

What I'm curious to know is....is it comfortable for vertical belt carry? Can anyone post some pics (horizontal and vertical) of this Spydie on your belt? What about some opinions on its' usefulness for EDC?

I know that there are different carry options for the Ronin, which really appeals to me more...on belt for work, around my neck for home and nonwork edc or vice versa. Man, I'm anxious to get it!

Hi KBR. I just got a Ronin about two weeks ago and I absolutely love it. So much so that it has become an EDC for me. I got rid of the Tek-Lok and use Paracord through the holes in the sheath to form belt loops. I run the belt on the outside of the sheath so it is between the belt and the waistband of my pants. It is quite comfortable, hardly noticeable, there above my right back pocket. I prefer vertical carry but it does quite well for horizontal carry, too. If I am going somewhere that I don't want it seen and am not wearing a coat, I slip it into my front pocket. It is a little bulky for the front pocket but hides well. I have carried it in the back pocket a few times as well, and it fits good there, but tends to take a little punishment when getting into/out of vehicles. I haven't carried it around my neck yet outside of the house but it will probably end up around my neck next time I go bicycling. Don't worry about it being uncomfortable to carry because it carries very well.

As far as uses for EDC, the tip seems a bit delicate, although very sharp, so I haven't tested it on anything too hard, but it cuts cardboard quite well. I still carry my Native in my front-right pocket to do the dirty work with. I hope you enjoy the Ronin as much as I do.

KBR sorry to hijack your post. OBTW I would love to get a Ronin someday but right now I have bigger fish to fry.
Anywho was on this forum and thgouth I would post my thoughts of the Becker BK-7. Wow this thing is big. A lot bigger then I expected. I think my co worker will be very happy with it. The thing is BEEFY. Comfortable handle and I really like the balance and heft. Almost wish I had ordered my self one. I don't think you will be dissapointed. Let me know how you made out. Again sorry to hijack your Ronin thread. Take Care!!!

My Ronins are almost EDC, depending on my clothing at the time. Since I must carry a pistol when I leave the house, and my primary EDC folder is a sheathed Gunting, there is not always spare room on the belt with the spare magazines, phone, and perhaps an ASP, for a sheathed FB knife. When I pack light, or need to dress for discretion instead of tactical dominance, I will often wear a Ronin for a downward draw on the belt, or as a necker if wearing an untucked shirt. Both positions are comfortable enough for EDC for me. If I were to leave law enforcement, and stay in Texas, my Ronins would become EDC along with my Gunting, because Texas allows concealed carry of fixed blades, but there are many places a person cannot carry a pistol even with a concealed carry license. Edited to add: Vertical belt carry with upward draw is also comfortable, but for concealed carry, the downward draw works better for me, especially as a bad guy might try to keep me from drawing my pistol upward, and a downward draw would be a handy card to play in that event. On my body, the only place horizontal carry conceals well is behind my back, and I do not like to carry things there. Many guys can use horizontal carry quite well, though.

Rex.

You say with a CCW in Texas, I can carry a fixed blade knife? They must have changed it since I took my cerification for the permit.

Thanks

CKE,

I recently got a Becker BK-7 as well. What a brute, hmmmm? I intend to carry it Alberta camping this summer, with a plain edge S30V Military in the front pocket of the sheath.

Fixed blades are legal in Texas, concealed or not, assuming the knife meets all the other standards for legality, such as not exceeding 5.5 inches in blade length, and not being a dagger, dirk, poniard, or Bowie. It is a widely held myth that fixed blades are illegal for concealed carry in Texas, even believed by some police officers. A Texas CCL is only for handguns, by the way, and does not apply to other weapons. The key is that Texas law does not even consider a legal knife to be a weapon, unless of course during the commission of a crime, it is USED as a weapon. Anything CAN be a weapon, "in the manner of its use." If someone tries to use a car to strike and kill someone, the charge will be aggravated assault, because the car, in the manner of its use, was a deadly weapon. But merely possessing an automobile is not a crime. It is the same with a legal knife. I hope this made sense. I just finished a long night shift that went a little over.

The biggest problem I see with using a knife like the Ronin as an EDC is that you risk giving people a heart attack when you take it out to open a package from FedEX at the office!
