ABOUT THIS GREY FRN Disco'd model...

Aloha all!

Wouldn't it be great if Spyderco reintro'd their dico'd line in grey FRN? The grey color would symbolize a "reintro-run"...I think it'd be great for a lot of the new Spyderco addicts who never had the chance to get a Worker, PE Mariner, Rookie, and I don't know how this would work w/ collaberations, but models like the Goddard, Walker, Horn, e.t.c. could also be made available again for both new and old Spyder users alike!

I think a greyFRN worker, Walker, or Horn would look wicked! A grey FRN Goddard would definitely get a great MBC workout! It would also give myself and others a chance to use these knives again, knowing that our originals are safe and sound in the knife drawer!

Sometimes, when i'm doing normal maintenance on my spydercollection, I WANT to carry my Walker, Worker, Q, just for the day...but that'd be crazy. Just the thought of dinging an edge, or scratching them...yikes!

Anyone else feel this way?

Interesting idea Daywalker. Hate to be a wet blanket, but I do see a few problems.

The Worker and the Rookie were never made in FRN. Tooling up to make FRN versions, just to do the type of short run done with the Calypso Jr., would probably not be economically feasible. The Worker was available in grey almite, but considering the low prices the grey almite 20th Anniversary and most of the regular Workers have been fetching lately on eBay, even another run of those might not sell.

The Mariner, technically, was never made in FRN, although the C14 Rescue could be considered an FRN version of it. In fact, there is a fair possibility of a short run of the new 93mm Rescue with the forward finger notch in plain edge. I asked for that one and Sal indicated he might be willing to do up a small batch of them. If that comes to pass, it would be pretty close to an FRN Mariner, though most likely in blue or black.

The FRN tooling for the collaborations you mention probably still exists but, like you, I'm not sure whether the original agreements would allow for it.

The Q came in grey, albeit a much lighter one than the new Calypso Jr., and since any new Q produced would undoubtedly become an instant collectors item, not sure if that would really solve the dilemma you face or not. That really becomes an issue with any of the disco'd cos. IMHO, a short run of any "collectible" model, even with some unique feature to distinguish it from older originals, is doomed to be thought of as a collectors piece itself. Its kind of a vicious circle.

Finally, as much as I would like to think otherwise, I suspect that despite all the hoo-hah on the forums about it, and the seeming large (percentage wise) number of forumites from the various knife forums purchasing the grey Calypso Jrs., total sales volume probably has not been all that impressive. We, after all, even in our totality, are a fairly small community, and those of us with an interest in a specific brand or type smaller yet, and those with both the desire and discretionary funds to purchase a specific model when it becomes available, smaller still.

A viable alternative, at least where some of the models you mention are concerned, is to keep an eye out for a "pre-dinged" original. Most co models do show up that way occasionally, at prices that reflect their less than perfect condition, on the forums and eBay. After all, only the first scratch is traumatic.

If there is ever to be another run of Matriarch's, I would suggest another colour (not grey), something unique to that run, runing them again in grey in my opinion is BAAAADDD for the collectors, there where only 500 grey's released, I purchased two of that original run, to pump out another 500 of the same colour would almost make the secial run "common".

Mabey a red handle?

Cheers
