The greatest mail call ever??

#1

Post by Surfingringo »

For me, i think it is. Well, maybe receiving the first Siren and Waterway topped this but nothing else! I haven’t felt this kind of excitement over a new knife in YEARS!

Image

I’ll offer some very brief initial observations on both knives.

Catcherman:

I was a Spyderco fan back in the 90’s but got busy with all kinds of other life stuff and didn’t really come back to the brand until about 2012. The catcherman was no longer available but it was the one knife that I always regretted not getting to try. So I was obviously excited to try it but you know how often the reality of a design that we’ve only seen on the internet doesn’t meet expectations. Well, not this time! The Catcherman meets and exceeds!

From a waterman and fisherman’s perspective, I feel like everything about this knife is just right. Length is perfect. Long enough to pull fillets but still compact enough to fit in a pocket or IWB. Blade thickness is ideal too for a knife that is going to be a multi-purpose/fillet. Even the combo edge is a win IMO. Not something I would normally want on a “fillet” knife, but it is short enough that it doesn’t interfere with fillet work but provides a few nice teeth at the heel of the blade for cutting line, etc. Was it Sal who designed the Catcherman? If so, I think this a pretty incredible design for someone who is not a full time fisherman. Nailed it!

PM2 Salt:

This is one that I wasn’t really sure I would like. I like the PM2 design overall, but I wasn’t sure I would like the handle texture. I was never really a fan of that texture on the Caribbean. The finish was too slick for my use and the angles on the grooves were a bit sharp for my taste. None of that is a concern on the PM2 Salt. I am absolutely in LOVE with this handle! The way they combined peel ply G10 with the deeper machined grooves is awesome. Super comfortable but those big grooves provide WAY more grip in wet and bloody/slimy conditions. Regular peel ply just fills up with fish goo too easily and gets very slippery. The deep relief of the grooves helps dramatically with that. The completely blacked out look is quite beautiful too IMO. And to get all that with the performance of Magnacut is such a huge deal. This knife is a HUGE WIN. I might have to pick up a yellow handle or serrated version too. Thank you Spyderco!!

One question. I’m sure it’s been discussed here but I’ve been out of the loop for awhile. I had some issues with the detent ball corroding on the original Caribbean several years ago. I believe they changed that with a CQI update? Does anyone know what material is being used for the detent ball on the new PM2 Salt? I’m hoping they are using ceramic or some equally non corrosive material now.

Hey Lance,

- Glad you got the Catcherman, and I hope you´ll share your thoughts and experience how it will fare particularily as a "multipurpose" knife (as you put it)!

You might know that I am all for thin(ner) bladestock, but in case of the Catcherman I am not sure if the blade is not TOO thin for its length to really be "multipurpose" (while I think that up to Endela size 2.5 mm stock and then up to Millie size 3mm stock is thick enough, as long as the tips are not ground TOO fine).

NOT(!) a critique of the Catcherman, just the question where it positions itself between a perfect "specialist" and a "multipurpose" blade.

- I think there is no SE version of the PM2 Salt - which is a pity imo. If I got another PM2 this would be it, but I´d definitely want SE

- I can recall you saying in some post something along the lines that you purposefully gave your Siren a backlock (and not a comp. or linerlock) due to the added security in hand while operating the knife (and also the added safety iwb/in pocket - ?).
How do you feel about the comp.lock of the PM2 Salt in that regard?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I'm quite jealous of your Catcherman, Lance.
I really hope I can catch one while they're still around, and without paying crazy money, which is my only option atm. I really feel like time is running out.

The PM2 salt looks nice. It's almost tempting me to give the PM2 another go, but I'll hold off and read more user experiences first. Yours will definitively carry much weight in that regard.

I’m literally refreshing Lamnia’s Catcherman page multiple times a day waiting for them to get stock. I managed to get one on pre-order from some shooting website in the UK, but it is currently languishing 10,808kms away from my current location in a relative’s house…in the UK 😂 they only delivered to the UK and I’m not going back there till mid-2025. Fingers crossed we both get one (or two 😉) each from Lamnia at a reasonable price.

One might say that the Catcherman was designed for you Lance :winking-tongue It's not quite my cup of tea but I shall be all over a MC PM2 with the satin blade. Despite the hype I am not a fan of magnacut but I am very curious about how that handle feels in my hand. Enjoy your new acquisitions !

Nice one Lance. I was expecting to see a fish in that box, but with you, you don't need one.

Is that a USN one or LC200N? I saw zombie green and thought I'd see a black blade. (Sorry if that's a dumb question, I haven't been following important things for a while.)

That’s the recent satin LC200N version of the Catcherman, not the USN one.

Lance, I’ve been super curious since you first posted this thread: what kind of animal skull is that in your first pic?
