Re: Price increases for 2024
I've slowed down a lot as well, and have drastically thinned out my collection. I very rarely buy run of the mill production models anymore (although I just ordered an Emerson Dragonfly with the intention of adding Flytanium titanium scales) because they mostly bore me. I want something that's special (design, materials, limited numbers, etc.). Unfortunately, that often means that anything that truly interests me is going to be $500 or more, and I'm just not willing to pay that for a knife very often. It generally takes something like the Paysan to tempt me.

Re: Price increases for 2024
SpydieChef was $191.97 when it first came out in October 2016. At the time, MAP was 40% off MSRP of $319.95. Since then the MSRP has increased to $404.00 and with MAP being 25% off MSRP means the dealer price will be $303.00 tomorrow.

Re: Price increases for 2024
It's worse when you go back pre MAP as well.
I paid $98.99 from Blade HQ for my Yojimbo 2 in 2012. In fairness with inflation that Yo2 price is $131, but imagine my surprise when the Micro Jimbo came out at $175, and the Yo2 is literally over double that price now with the 75% MAP
Re: Price increases for 2024
The Microjimbo is $184 now with this latest increase btw. I probably should've bought one right when they came out.phaust wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 9:48 amIt's worse when you go back pre MAP as well.

I too got my Yojimbo2 before MAP in August 2013 for $104.15. It's $198.00 now. Also, most places charge sales tax now but didn't back then. So, at BladeHQ Yojimbo2 is $216.81 with CA sales tax!

Re: Price increases for 2024
Looking at prices today post increase, it seems like MAP discount indeed decreased from 30% to 25%, and MSRP stayed the same for the few examples I looked at.

How the h*** are these knives increase $100 over 10 years?!!...nothing has gone up like knives has. This is ridiculous. My shoes haven't increased 100% over 10 years....matter of fact I can't find much that has increased that much.....think about it!
Re: Price increases for 2024
There has been no official announcements from Spyderco regarding the new pricing effective February 1, 2024 and no “Retail Price Guide” accompanied the “2024 Product Guide”!
Will a Price Guide accompany the upcoming Reveal 15?
Also, what happened to the January 2024 byte emailed newsletter (they used to be released like clockwork on or near the last business day of each month)?

Re: Price increases for 2024
I have only bought sprint runs, discontinued models, or map sale knives over the last two years. It's rare that I will buy a production model at map pricing.

Exactly same here. I look for 45%-50%+ off MSRP. I’m way past needs.

Re: Price increases for 2024
Using an online inflation calculator to compare the value of 319.95 in 2016 to 2023 dollars results in an inflation adjusted value of 406.19, 27% inflation.
So while the new prices are eye popping, I don’t see them as out of line. Of course, your mileage may vary regarding wages keeping up with inflation, which is whole other issue.

You should use the street price of SpydieChef in October 2016 ($191.97) with added inflation to now which would make it $243.60 (+27%) but the current street price is $303.00 (+58%).

Re: Price increases for 2024
I only calculated with MSRP because the MAP changed quite dramatically, and I suspect that’s not inflation related. So the new MSRP is within inflation range. Yes, the new price after MAP is beyond just inflation.
Re: Price increases for 2024
Any lowering of the MAP discount rate, even without a change in MSRP, effectively raises the price for the consumer.
MAP 40% off MSRP JAN 2016
MAP 35% off MSRP JAN 2018
MAP 30% off MSRP JAN 2020
MAP 25% off MSRP FEB 2024

Re: Price increases for 2024
I wonder what's the motivation behind lowering the MAP discount. Maybe it's to allow non-USA dealers to be at least somewhat competitive? But that's backwards in mmyt book... Maybe that's to keep the MSRP the same as an illusion of prices not rising?`

Re: Price increases for 2024
What I don’t understand is a production PM2 is $185 for S45VN steel but a sprint could be less money for what I assume is a more expensive steel.

Re: Price increases for 2024
Dealer exclusives do not appear to be held to the same MAP % of MSRP as regular production products, and dealers have more flexibility in having sales on their exclusives outside of the across-the-dealer-network MAP holidays.RugerNurse wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 6:17 amWhat I don’t understand is a production PM2 is $185 for S45VN steel but a sprint could be less money for what I assume is a more expensive steel.
(note dealer/distributor exclusives are not the same thing as sprints that go to a variety of dealers)
