Knife Battle

#1

Post by vivi »

This is a fun game I've played on some music forums. Thought it might be fun to do with spydies.

RULES

1. First poster picks two Spyderco knives. Post a picture of them if you can for those less familiar with the more obscure models.

2. Next poster picks which one they like better, and writes a little about why.

3. Then they pit the winner against a new challenger, and the next poster picks their favorite, and so on.

4. Only respond to the latest battle. Don't respond to battles that have already been decided by another poster.

So, let's begin!

Native Chief VS Manix XL

Which one would you pick?

Of these two, I would choose the Native Chief. I don't have the Manix XL, but do have the Manix. While many really like this knife, I don't really care for this type of lock mechanism. That makes the Native Chief an easy choice for me.

With that winner, I would put it up against one of my favorites, the Chaparral.

Just to clarify the rules, can the next poster reply to any battle or just the last posted battle? I'm hoping it's any as that would make for some interesting future comparisons.

It's supposed to be a chain, so your reply is the current battle that people should respond to.

BTW never noticed just how similar the lines are between those two models! Makes me want to keep a eye out for a cool chap sprint.

Native Chief, hands down. To be fair, they are very different sizes, but that’s actually the point here: the Native Chief is a much more capable knife.

Next up: the Native Chief vs. another 4”er, the Stretch 2 XL.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I'll take up the gauntlet and say Stretch 2 XL all day and every day for me.

To me it feels better in hand than any other folder. I much, much prefer the Stretch's blade: long straight portion with belly near the tip to the Chief's continuous curve. I like a shallow thumb ramp better than either a steep ramp or no ramp. I like the Stretch family's aesthetics more than the Native family's. The Stretch 2 XL is already offered in (IMO) a much nicer high-end variant than the Chief, and is now offered in a much, much nicer variant, the Nishijin/Damascus model.

My question is this: Which do you like better, the Stretch 2 XL or the Military in any of its versions?

I ask because I'm not sure myself.

I'm going with the Military.

I do prefer some aspects of the SXL to the Military though. It has a lock I prefer, tip up clip, thinner stock and lighter weight build.

But even though the Military looks like it should lose for me on paper, I prefer it. The ergonomics fit my grip better. The choil takes up less space, which gets my hand closer to the edge when not using it. I prefer the continuous curve blade shapes. I love how low the tip sits. And I love the efficient slicing action the negative blade angle offers.

If you're going to choose can you provide the next battle? Otherwise someone else can reply to the Military / Para 3 post with their own so things keep moving. Thanke!

Military all the way - there’s no replacement for displacement and that Millie kicks a PM3 to the curb in that department.

For my vs I’m going to go Military against Police 4 LW. Battle of the big boys!

Military over the Police LW. I prefer G10 over FRN. The Military seems more balanced and feels better in hand in my opinion.

Military vs... the Shaman!

Ok, I´ll play - but two points first:

- I never owned, but could only handle a Shaman
- "Military" for me is the Millie 1 here (with which I do have quite a bit experience)

And the winner is:

The Millie.

Reasoning:

- I prefer a good linerlock over a comp. lock by a lot
- The Millie is lighter while offering more cutting edge
- Same blade stock, but the Millie has a thinner, more slicey blade overall
- Millie ("1"!) has that great, short, minimal choil
- Nice, negative blade angle

What the Shaman does "better" for me (but not enough to win): More robust tip, tip up carry option

Now I´ll put the Millie against my most favorite folder platform ever:

The Endura...

The Military is a Spyderco classic, not that the Endura isn't but I prefer the liner lock. The Gayle Bradley is my favorite Spyderco liner lock knife...

Never handled the Military, but GB1 is basically perfect, so it wins. perfect grind, perfect ergos for heavy cutting, absolutely solid lockup (like a fixed blade, really). Only thing it might benefit from is a small forward finger stop, but that's debatable.

GB1 vs Lil' Temperance 3 (K390 if we're being specific)

As always, you surprise me with an excellent thread idea vivi, thanks for making this place liveful man !

I'd choose the Gayle Bradley just because I've been after it for a couple of years and still am in my honey moon phase :').
More seriously, I don't know if every blade has the same thinness behind the edge but my Gayle Bradley is just crazy thin BTE, thinner than my Chaparrals.

How about the Gayle Bradley versus Gayle Bradley 2 ?

Image

Dang too late, It's GB1 vs. Lil'Temperance 3 K390 then :)
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Robin. Finally made an IG : ramo_knives

My GB1 is just under .018" bte, with the edge dropped to about 10 dps. That hollow grind, though...

In the GB1 vs Lil Temp LW K390 for me it’s got to be the Lil Temp - handle forward design, a comp lock (I really don’t resonate with frame and liner locks), joyous steel and a chunky monkey of a blade that would be great for my nefarious outdoor uses.

Next up - Lil Temp LW K390 VS Yojumbo CF S90V (since we’re getting specific).

I'd pick the CF yojumbo and I'm carrying it today.

But for the battle CF S90V Yojumbo vs Kris. I choose both which is why I'm currently carrying both.
